About Matthew

I am a qualified secondary mathematics teacher with over fifteen years' experience providing private maths tuition from KS1 all the way through to A-Level and onto adult education. I also help students prepare for 11+ and entrance exams. I have helped hundreds of students achieve excellent results in their GCSEs, A Levels or 11+. I estimate that I have provided close to 10,000 hours of tuition. I have a PGCE in secondary mathematics and a degree in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Bath. I have taught at Ivybridge Community College and have been working with Plymstock School for over ten years providing one-to-one and small group tuition in addition to my private clients. My passion and enthusiasm for the subject can be traced all the way back to my own school days; I achieved the top grades in mathematics for both GCSE and A Level, studied for additional qualifications (Statistics and Further Mathematics at GCSE and A Level respectively) and received several ‘Best in School’ and gold certificates in my years of taking part in the UK Mathematics Challenge. My own children are now working their way through primary school and so I am actively involved in supporting them in their own mathematical adventures! I have an excellent track record in helping students meet or exceed their targets, backed up by glowing testimonials from parents. I have QTS status and DBS clearance and am happy to show all certificates/testimonials on request.

About the lesson

I am friendly and approachable and will always tailor my lessons to the needs and abilities of the individual students. I have a passion for mathematics and always try to make my lessons engaging and fun. I teach at the student's pace and work hard to create a safe environment where they feel comfortable to discuss any areas of challenge, at any level. I believe private tuition can be truly transformative in building confidence, unlocking potential and helping students to achieve excellent results. The frequency and length of lessons can be tailored to individual requirements. I have an extensive bank of resources and often make my own, and am equally well-equipped to teach in person or online. I can travel to students' homes or students are welcome to travel to me. My standard rate for individual tuition is £40/hr. In the run-up to the summer's GCSE exams, I also offer group tuition from £20/hr. Please contact me for more details.

Perfect! Matthew is really knowledgeable and helped my daughter with her A Level Maths. He explains problems well and last week she finally got to understand how to solve a problem which 4 other teachers at school struggled to explain. Would definitely recommend him.

Matthew first help my daughter to prepare for Maths GCSE and he made a huge difference to her grades from not much hope with foundation paper to a 6 with higher paper. Now he is helping my son too and the difference and improvement is already evident. I know maths and offered to help, but Matthew can actually teach Maths, adapting his teaching methods to their individual learning styles. I would recommend Matthew to anybody considering Maths tuition.

Matthew gives good explanation and takes the stress away from me trying to help. He sets weekly homework and marks it with the boys, covering in more depth where they are struggling.
