About Joanne

I have been teaching languages for 28 years, including 22 years of teaching Spanish at GCSE and A Level (in independent schools as well as in FE). My most recent post (until August 2019) was Head of Spanish at a popular independent school, which means that I am fully conversant with the current specifications and requirements for AQA and Edexcel in all exams, and a number of my pupils have gone on to study languages at university. I also had my own business for 7 years, running a diverse range of language courses for adults. This included one-to-one lessons and bespoke courses for businesses. For the past 2 years I have been tutoring a number of students (both at their homes and online) and running local courses for adults. I have an enhanced DBS.

About the lesson

Hola! Me llamo Jo - With many years of experience teaching languages to a whole range of abilities and ages (from 5 to 85!) I have a vast amount of experience and success in improving all language skills and exam technique. Teaching students to speak a language is a building process which requires a good rapport, engaging, interactive activities and plenty of encouragement. I currently teach pupils across the board from KS3 to KS5. I particularly enjoy helping them to understand (and even enjoy!) grammar and believe that it is easily accessible to all language learners whatever their ability. Confidence is a major factor in language learning and this can be easily achieved with a focus on speaking - in tandem with target vocabulary and new grammatical structures. In my non-exam classes that I run for adults, I also apply this methodology as my many years of experience have taught me that a major emphasis on speaking and listening is key to mastering and enjoying a language.

I left school believing that I simply could NOT learn a language. However, with encouragement and a teaching style that really suited ME, I sat my GCSE last year and passed ( with a 7)...Not bad for a foreign language no hoper!!!
