About Raphael

I’m Raphael, and I pay attention to the moment before a mistake as well as the mistake itself. Where were your eyes? Did you know the next hand position? Were you still thinking about the previous bar? I will ask these questions without expecting you to monitor everything at once. Sometimes the most useful answer is simply, “I lost my place when I looked down.” We can work with that by choosing a better moment to glance at the keyboard and a recognizable place to return to in the score. “Concentrate more” is not a substitute for giving you a workable action.

I want lessons to leave enough mental space for you to try something properly. A child may need a short demonstration and one visual cue rather than a lengthy explanation. A teenager may want to see how a reading or fingering idea applies directly to a chosen piece. An adult may prefer understanding the reason first, especially when rebuilding skills after a break. I will adjust how we approach the task without assuming that age tells me everything about how you learn. You can ask to hear it again, see it more slowly, or attempt it before we discuss it further.

I also welcome questions about my suggestions. A fingering needs to work with your hand and the surrounding phrase, not merely match something written above the notes. We can examine an alternative and decide what happens when the tempo increases or the next chord arrives. That does not mean changing instructions randomly; it means knowing what makes a choice useful. There will be careful work, but also complete play-throughs where the purpose is continuity and expression rather than immediate correction. I want you to build both the ability to improve a passage and the confidence to let a piece unfold without inspecting every note while you play it.

About the lesson

When your eyes are busy identifying the note you are already supposed to be playing, the next one can feel like an interruption. My lessons develop the habit of preparing musical information before your hands need it. For a complete beginner, this starts with finding your way around the groups of black keys and recognising simple actions: repeat, move to a neighbour, or skip a key. We connect those actions with short tunes and introduce notation alongside the sound. Later, you learn to notice groups in the score—a repeated rhythm, a rising shape, or a chord pattern—so reading becomes more than decoding a succession of isolated symbols.

Keyboard movement gets its own preparation too. A jump can go wrong because the hand leaves late or has no clear destination, not because you are incapable of reaching the notes. We might identify the next position, look towards it at a planned moment, and practise arriving with the fingers resting lightly on the intended keys before sounding them. Then we restore the movement’s rhythm. This separates knowing where to go from striking accurately while travelling. Small hands are not asked to hold uncomfortable stretches as a test of commitment; we consider movement and fingering alternatives. In advanced repertoire, the same preparation helps organise larger leaps and rapid changes of hand position.

When both hands work separately but lose their way together, we preserve the music while temporarily reducing how much needs managing. For example, the left hand might play only the bass note at each harmony change while the right hand keeps its melody. That gives you the real timing and harmonic direction without the full accompaniment competing for attention. We then restore the left-hand pattern in manageable stages. Fingering is chosen with the next musical group in mind, rather than solving each note independently and discovering too late that the hand is trapped. You learn to prepare a sequence of movements, not simply to survive the next key.

Sound matters as much as navigation. We listen for whether the melody remains audible, whether phrase endings relax, and whether the pedal connects harmonies or leaves old notes clouding new ones. In a pedal exercise, you might hold the new chord with your fingers while releasing the pedal to clear the previous harmony, then pedal again and hear the difference. The action is tied to an audible result, not just a foot instruction. Returning players can rebuild reading and coordination through music at a workable level; developing and advanced players can apply the same attention to denser textures. Your practice notes will identify where to look ahead, what movement to prepare, and what sound should tell you it worked.
