About Laura

I grew up surrounded by books. My family is by no means rich, but my mother and her family is a long line of librarians, and by golly that woman nickled and dimed her way into building her little home library. I was never at a loss for reading material, but it was school that made me hate reading. Specifically the AR program. I felt cornered, confused, bored, misunderstood, and all-around angry. It was a kind school librarian that noticed, disobeyed the principal that said I wasn't allowed to check out any books outside my level or any books that weren't AR and simply gave me books she thought I would like.
I fell in LOVE with Lloyd Alexander and Susan Cooper with a "2.2 reading level" in FIFTH GRADE no less, imagine that. 10 years old, the school thought my reading level was that of a 5 or 6 year old, and I was reading Harry Potter and murder mysteries behind their backs.
I tell you this because I want you to understand and I want your kids to understand that I KNOW HOW FRUSTRATING IT IS.
I didn't understand it right away either.
I'm not a fast reader.
And sometimes I get my tongue tied when reading out loud! ok, all the time my tongue get's tied when reading out loud- but that doesn't mean we stop! that means we laugh it off, take a deep breath and start the sentence over!
Sometimes the paragraph over again!
WHY?!
BECAUSE CARL IS IN THAT DUNGEON AND I GOTTA KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!
OR SOMETIMES THE BUTLER IS FRAMED!!
sometimes....don't you wanna find out too?

EACH CHILD AND PARENT WILL BE ABLE TO CHOOSE THEIR OWN BOOK- for a list i will provide. I encourage the parents and child to choose together out of what I provide, that way the parents are invested in the childs learning and there is no “THE BOOK IS ABOUT WHAT NOW?!”
The books chosen are appropriate for everyone. I'm not going to demean a preteen by giving them a baby book even if that's what the schools say is their “reading level”. I know of books that are easy reads that will also be interesting to those that are older.
I do not judge a “reading level” by numbers or dots on a spine. In my experience and from what I've observed, this has led to underappreciating and disregarding what's right in front of everyone.
First, let's start with putting one foot in front of the other. The school systems everywhere have forgotten that you have to learn your alphabet before you learn to spell….putting the cart before the proverbial horse.
They wish so hard to shove everything down a students throat they're teaching math in kindergarten. -NOT that I don't understand the joy in a child's face when they are learning and going to school for the first time…we've all seen that shine in their eyes die far too quickly.
There is no shame in ONE step at a time learning.
In MATURE learning.
This is knowing what the child is ready to read. If the child is in second grade and reading Harry Potter, great. If they are in seventh grade and reading Goosebumps, that's also great.
Let NO “reading level” program tell you otherwise. What matters is how this effects and affects their work around them. Are they comprehending what they are reading?

GOALS
~Understand what you are reading more naturally.
~You don't need to read quickly, (I myself am a very slow reader. I digest my books like a fine feast…).
~Expand individuals' vocabulary and understanding.

CHALLENGE
(extra fees * might * apply) - this challenge area is a "deep dive". these books listed have a MORE to them. They might be fiction, but the authors also did their research and i would HATE to let that go to waste. To pick these books is to go FULL IMMERSION. History and the gritty side that no one shares, maps, learning how to use a compass, Read stars, resgognize herbs, photography and nature, FIELD TRIPS, want to know how to chop wood and haul wood? want to know how knights really felt when they were away from their castles? If a Large bonfire is awesome, image how a wild fire must be like?
that is what we will be discussing as we read these books and delving deeper into them.

the seeing stone - holland
Freckles - porter
the harvester -porter
(hank winton)Smokechasers/jumpers - Montgomery Atwater
