About Kathryn

I've been tutoring, teaching, and consulting with students in writing and the performing arts for over 30 years now. From the moment I stepped in front of a classroom the first time as an undergrad, I was caught and held by the love of teaching. Those were middle school students, and the teacher commended me for "having those kids eating out of the palm of your hand."

When I was 21, I started teaching first-year composition at the University level, and I have worked in both K-12 and university settings ever since. I have taught online for a large public university and in person at a private Catholic middle school. I have been the lead instructor for multiple creative writing camps and for drama camps, and I have consulted with master's and doctoral students on their dissertations. Students regularly comment that I have had a transforming effect on their writing and performing abilities, and that I have helped them shape their futures and find their voices.

About the lesson

My approach is to tailor everything to your needs. In our first session, we'll talk about your goals and I'll do a little assessment of your current ability. No pressure -- it's just to let me know where you are in your journey.

Once I have a good picture of where you are and where you want to be, I help you close that gap. We will do short assignments where I will give you prompts and you can write, or you may write speeches and give them to me (if you are with me for speech), and then I will critique your writing.

Working on a novel? I'll help you structure it. Working on a short story? I'll review it. Working on an essay for school or publication? I'll give you expert feedback. Need to give a speech and have nerves? We'll work on it. The goal is to help you become a better writer or speaker and grow through our work together, and if you have a particular request or deadline, we can make that a goal as well.

I work primarily with adults, but I do work with exceptional and advanced writers and speakers/performers in grades 5 and up. The younger the student, the more exceptional they need to be, but I will work with students as young as 10 years old if they are a good fit.
