About Ja'el

Hello! My name is Ja'el Thomas, and I just graduated from DePauw University with a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and a Bachelor's degree in Communications. I have been studying Spanish for seven years. During my time in college, I was in a program called Servicio En Las Americas, which was a Spanish Immersion program in which I had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica and be completely immersed in the language. My level of Spanish matured drastically, and from there my passion grew, and I decided to major in the language. Due to my genuine love of the language, I received the Sigma Delta Pi award for my level of Spanish proficiency and my dedication to learning Spanish. The reason I am teaching Spanish is that I believe it is very important to learn as it is one of the most spoken languages in the world, and I think it can open many doors as you can converse with a completely different set of people. I look forward to teaching you Spanish and encouraging your love for the language. About the lesson

-First, I test the general level of the student with a proficiency quiz.
-Then after gauging the level, I inquire about what the student wants to learn and to what level of proficiency they want to achieve.
-From there, I tailor my lesson plan to that individual. For example, if a student were to start off at the beginning level and would like to reach advanced, I would start by having them create a Duolingo account because it helps with vocabulary and eventually sentences building. Then, for their homework, they will be tasked with completing certain levels.
-I will teach grammar and how sentences are formed.
-I will also review basic vocabulary, like verbs and nouns that are more commonly used so that they can start practicing conversations.
-I will also work on the correct pronunciation of Spanish words.
-I will teach how to not only speak Spanish but read and write Spanish as well. This includes drills where I will read a few sentences in Spanish and then the student will be tasked with writing them down. I will check for correct spelling, and accented words.
-Lastly, I am a firm believer that immersion is very helpful when learning a new language, so my students and I will have conversations in Spanish once they have reached certain milestones.
