Initially, I would observe their previous study methods or practices (if any) and give them feedback, then give them a few essays, description tasks, paragraphs, stories and books to see how they would present it (read), what they understood in addition to the details they would like to take as inspiration etc. Moreover, for my writing students, I'd look into the genres and setting they would like to focus on before giving them tips and sources they can use for their work. My courses are set for beginners to intermediate students.
