I am a Computer Programming tutor with 6 years of experience and a BSc in Software Engineering. I have taught over 215 students from school beginners through to professionals changing careers into technology roles. My programming teaching treats the documentation habit as a core professional skill from the very first lesson, because students who comment and document their code consistently develop faster than those who treat code as purely instrumental, since explaining code in words forces the programmer to understand it at a deeper level. My approach to teaching Python to students with mathematical or scientific backgrounds specifically leverages their existing knowledge — using numpy arrays as a concrete example of vectorised operations, matplotlib for visualising functions they already know — because learning programming through familiar mathematical content accelerates progress dramatically for this population. I teach version control from an early stage because the habit of committing code regularly with meaningful messages, even for small student projects, prepares students for professional and collaborative software development environments. Error handling and defensive programming are taught as attitudes rather than just techniques — students learn to anticipate what can go wrong and write code that responds gracefully rather than only writing the happy path. Web scraping, API consumption, and basic automation are introduced as motivating real-world applications once foundational programming is secure, because the ability to make computers do genuinely useful things is the most powerful motivator for continued programming development. My teaching goal is a programmer who writes code that works, explains itself, and can be maintained by someone other than its author.
