About Alexander
I hold a PhD in English literature from Rice University. I am currently working as a professor in the Houston area and have worked several years on the tenure track at a major university. I have taught over fifty college-level courses in composition, technical writing, literature, film, and humanities at Rice, the University of Houston, Cal State Fresno, San Jacinto College, and UH Downtown. Beyond the university level, I have experience teaching ESL and dual-credit students looking to improve their college entrance essays, SAT scores, and general performance in English class.
I am bilingual in English and Spanish and equipped to tutor students of all backgrounds and levels of preparation regardless of the task or assignment.

I am an energetic, engaged tutor always looking to boil down questions, problems, and contexts into the simplest, more direct language available. I push students to excel in their area of choice, but I also cater to those wanting to go at a slower pace. Typically, my conversations with students will be organized around the goal of having them (through Socratic conversation and multifaceted explanation) produce the "answer" or deliverable, whatever that might be. As a tutor, I value intentionality and clarity--both in my own teaching, as well as qualities I look to cultivate in my students.
