About Louise

Louise has been performing and teaching for nearly 20 years. She gave her first professional recital at the age of 16 and, in the same year, began teaching as a teaching assistant at a conservatoire near Paris. Teaching and performing have therefore developed side by side throughout her professional life.

One of the defining features of her teaching is her ability to identify problems extremely quickly. She is regularly approached by other classical piano studios to work with students who have encountered a particular technical difficulty or reached a plateau. Louise is able to diagnose the underlying issue and provide a clear, efficient and practical route towards resolving it.

Her teaching is highly individual. Rather than imposing a single method, she adapts her approach to the way each student thinks, listens and learns. Her standards are exceptionally high, and she expects commitment and careful practice, but lessons remain encouraging, patient and kind.

Louise’s aim is not simply to correct mistakes, but to give students the tools to understand their own playing. She wants them to become technically secure, musically independent and confident performers, while retaining curiosity, imagination and a genuine enjoyment of music.

About the lesson

Dr Louise Cournarie is a concert pianist and highly experienced piano teacher, holding a Doctorate in Performance from the Royal Academy of Music. She currently teaches at St Paul’s Girls’ School, St Paul’s School and Winchester College, and has previously taught at King’s College London and worked as a Baroque Piano Coach at the Royal Academy of Music. Alongside her UK career, she tours China regularly, giving concerts, masterclasses and lectures at conservatoires and universities across Asia.

Alongside her teaching, Louise maintains an active international performing career, with appearances at venues including Wigmore Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields and Steinway Hall, as well as performing in live broadcasts for French national radio. She is also an experienced pedagogue and lecturer and has delivered specialist piano pedagogy training to more than 2,500 teachers in China.

Her teaching is characterised by exceptionally high standards combined with a kind, supportive and highly individual approach. She is committed to getting the absolute best from every student. Expectations are high and students are encouraged to work with ambition and discipline, but lessons are always carefully tailored to the individual’s personality, ability, goals and way of learning.

Her approach prioritises finding the clearest and most efficient route to progress, whether addressing technique, interpretation, practice methods or performance. Students are challenged to reach the highest level of which they are capable while developing confidence, independence, musical curiosity and a genuine love of playing.

Louise teaches from beginner to advanced and diploma level, with particular expertise in ABRSM Grade 8, ATCL, LTCL and FTCL, as well as audition, competition and performance preparation. Her advanced students regularly work towards diploma-level qualifications, with an outstanding record of results.
