About Sydney
Hello, my name is Sydney! I am a trained Historian with a Master's degree from the University of Manchester (Manchester, UK). I studied under Dr. Max Jones for my thesis, titled Jewish Food Cultures in Manchester, 1881-1939.
My specialties include modern Jewish, British, theatre, and food history, and I am currently dipping my toe in the history of the Isle of Man. However, I have over 50 credit hours in subjects such as Ancient, American, Middle Eastern, Andean, and East Asian history. I am always ready and willing to learn more about the history of different cultures. I am endlessly fascinated with people and how they interact with each other. Objects and ephemera such as letters, postcards, and more are extremely important to how I relate with history. I actually collect postcards -- the oldest one I have is from 1904!
I have extensive experience studying Education during my undergraduate degree (although I chose to take a route to archiving, my dream job would be to teach those interested in History about the usefulness of archives) and worked as a tutor since high school. I volunteered with elderly communities in obtaining oral history accounts for my graduate degree, and also volunteered with the Central Library in Manchester. At the library, our team of four people worked on a year-long project on the history of theatre in Manchester. I was also able to work on the Town Hall Photographers' Collection in scanning and archiving glass negatives from the last 100 years. Finally, I worked as the sole archivist at TMI Episcopal for several months, collecting photographs and determining the best ways in which to house and display them for the general public.
My most recent experience was working in Finance, because in the D.C. area it was very difficult to get into archiving positions without a Master's in the field -- but I continued to volunteer with local historical societies and archives up north. In my spare time, I write articles about living with chronic illness for the website The Mighty.
I am very friendly, empathetic, and adore History more than anything in the world. I would love the opportunity to help others become more passionate about the field of History.

This methodology is geared towards History (as History is much more hands-on than English or sociology) students, but does have slight changes between different subjects.
In situations where the student & I interact in person, I am interested in differentiated instruction, where the application of my instruction will depend on how best the student learns. Whether the student learns best by direct instruction and note taking, or by becoming involved in a project or assignment, I would be happy to provide a free session in which the student and I get to know each other better, and we will establish the best way of learning the material.
I am a big proponent of visiting museums and archives (if open -- and masks mandatory, please!) Otherwise, technology will be essential in the learning process. We will use online archives and read excerpts from books, articles, and letters. Objects are also vital in the study of history, so we will be examining and identifying their importance.
The student may choose to take a self-guided, personalized role in which they are the facilitator in what they learn. If there are specifics that need to be covered, they may be brought to me ahead of time so we may both prepare.
I am definitely open to every single kind of learning environment. I found that in school, I best learned by wearing several hats. Powerpoints, group projects, field trips, writing assignments, etc. are all equally important to me. I would be very happy to discuss the best ways in which the student and I can connect with each other in an educational setting.
All students are capable of achieving something great. We may cover exciting stories and anecdotes from throughout history, as well as reach into the more broader subjects.
