About Alyssa

I have over five years of experience as an educator, the last four of which were spent as a high school teacher at Sanford School in Hockessin. As a classroom teacher, I've taught environmental science for AP and college-prep as well as 9th grade biology (honors and college-prep). Prior to working at Sanford, I taught chemistry at the University of Delaware for first year life science and pre-med majors. In 2023, I won the Teacher Recognition Award from the Delaware Biotechnology Institute for mentoring one of my high school students in the BioGENEius science challenge.

About the lesson

I welcome working with students in grades 9-16 who are looking for extra help in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or introductory physical science. Science does NOT have to be your passion if you want to work with me--in fact, I enjoy helping students who don't see themselves as "science people" or who have been discouraged by other teachers find success. Whether I'm tutoring with a freshman in high school or a freshman in college, I work actively with students to meet their individual goals for a subject or course of study. Drawing from my experience as a high school and college educator, I help students create learning tools, like concept maps and other models, that help build long-term understanding and retention.
