About John

I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. I have clear memories of drawing dragons, animals, and portraits of my family from before kindergarten. In high school, I took the AP Drawing Portfolio class and got the highest possible score. I leveraged that to gain admittance to the School of Fine Arts at USC. There I gained not only mastery of the fundamentals of visual art in all media but also a deep appreciation for the role of art and artists, especially in contemporary and postmodern society. There I also began to establish my personal voice and style as an artist. While I am naturally more fluent in drawing, painting, and other 2D media, I am also highly skilled in 3D and sculptural media, and thus my work tends to live in the realm of mixed media.

After many years following art school and working in a variety of occupations centering around social and human services, I applied to grad school to become an art therapist. I had found again and again that my main interest in making art was in the healing psychological and emotional journey it fosters, not just for me but for others and the very special connection it can create between us in the process.

At the Marylhurst University graduate program for art therapy counseling, and through my practicum and internship positions as well as my post-graduate professional work, I have learned many valuable skills that supplement my foundation in visual art technique and theory in ways that make me a uniquely qualified teacher, mentor, and helper in the field of art instruction. These include fostering creativity, boosting self-confidence and self-expression, overcoming mental and emotional blocks and defense mechanisms, and perceiving the full spectrum of symbolic and emotional content in visual language, among other things.

Combining all of these skills, knowledge, and experiences, I am available to you to help you unlock your potential and achieve your goals as an artist. Where would you like to go? What would you like to create?

About the lesson

I believe art is the language of the soul, but without anchoring your speech in the common fundamentals, you might not be understood. I find the key to unlocking your potential as an artist is in finding your own balance of those two things, and it's my job as your teacher to help you do that. Whether you just want to learn technical drawing skills or develop and master your own artistic voice, I will help you define your goals and priorities and create a lesson plan to that. Typically it takes at least 3 lessons to have a satisfying experience from goal-setting to growth; however whatever your skill level or experience, I think we can find the artist in you and figure out where they want to go.
