About Jake

I am a Senior Music Theory and Piano student at the Crane School of Music, with hopes of pursuing my Master's in Piano Performance next year. I have an intense passion for music and the piano, and I want to share this with anybody that I can. I take my study of this instrument very seriously, but I also believe that humor and fun always have a place in the study of music. Music was made for enjoyment, after all. I aim to create a very personal environment, and want to get to know each student as a person and form a relationship so that the student feels comfortable being vulnerable in a lesson setting. I think it is very important to develop a positive and friendly relationship between the student and teacher. I do not simply want to be someone that tells you what you are doing wrong, but someone who inspires students to practice and improve. I want to foster the same kind of love and passion in my students that I have :)

About the lesson

I believe that music lessons should be a very enjoyable and engaging experience, that should be personalized to the tastes and goals of each individual student. It is very important to me that our lessons strike a healthy balance of fun, learning and work. My area of expertise is in the Classical and Romantic styles, but I am always happy to work on anything that a student brings to me. I want others to discover the joy of music in whatever way it manifests in them. I also will be more than happy to add bits of relevant music theory concepts to whatever we are working on, according to the students desire or ability to learn theory. I believe that no matter what kind of music you play, a solid foundation of music theory is indispensable in the development of musicianship. It helps to develop your musical ear, which helps to learn music faster and also allows you to understand what you are playing on a deeper level, which only will make for a more fulfilling musical experience. I began learning the piano much later than most, at the age of 21, while I was pursuing a non-music degree. I am now a Senior Piano and Music Theory student, with hopes of entering a graduate program for piano performance next year. I believe that having started so late offers a number of advantages for me as a teacher. Mainly it is that, as opposed to more naturally gifted pianists, I have had to struggle greatly as an adult to learn this skill, which has provided me a very deep and intimate knowledge of how to practice, as well as how to effectively troubleshoot technical problems, and communicate these solutions in a way that anyone can understand. The piano can be such a wonderful emotional outlet for anybody at any age, and can serve to be a near infinite source of entertainment and fulfillment throughout your entire life. Ultimately, I just want to share my love and passion for this instrument with whoever I can. I look forward to working with you :)
