About Richard

I am a dedicated and experienced software engineer, game developer and technical instructor with a strong passion for teaching and helping students reach their full potential. I have worked professionally across full-stack development, educational technology, game design and immersive learning, and I bring that real-world knowledge directly into my lessons. I have taught full-time programming courses, mentored developers entering the industry, and led the technical development of learning platforms and educational software. This gives me a strong understanding of both the academic requirements of Computer Science and the practical skills needed in the modern tech industry. My teaching style is supportive, structured and highly student-centered. I believe that confidence comes from understanding, not memorization, and I specialize in making complex ideas clear and accessible to learners of all levels. I am patient, encouraging, and skilled at building motivation and curiosity, particularly for students who have struggled elsewhere or lack confidence in the subject. I take pride in creating a calm and respectful environment where questions are welcomed and progress feels achievable. I love seeing students develop problem-solving ability, independence and belief in themselves. Whether preparing for exams, building projects, or exploring new technologies, I aim to make learning meaningful, enjoyable and deeply empowering. About the lesson

I focus on helping students build strong problem-solving skills and confidence, rather than simply memorizing code or theory. My teaching style is based on active learning using practical examples, small projects and real-world scenarios that make computer science meaningful and engaging. I break difficult concepts into simple, manageable steps and guide students to understand why something works, not just how to write it. I encourage questions, experimentation, creativity and independent thinking. Lessons often include hands-on exercises, coding challenges and review of past-exam style questions to build exam readiness and technical fluency. For those who struggle with confidence or processing speed, I provide a calm, patient and structured approach. For more advanced learners, I offer deeper exploration and extension tasks that stretch their ability. A typical lesson is between sixty and ninety minutes, depending on the student’s preference and attention span. Sessions usually include a short recap of what we covered previously, followed by explanation and worked examples. We then move into guided practice and problem-solving, supported discussion around errors and improvement strategies, and optional project or coursework help where needed. I am a professional software engineer, game developer and technical instructor with extensive real-world industry experience. I have taught full-time programming courses and mentored junior developers, as well as delivering training in game development, Unity, React, JavaScript, TypeScript and educational technology. My background enables me to connect theory directly to professional practice in a way that is engaging, practical and easy to apply. I work with a wide range of learners, including Leaving Certificate Computer Science students at both Higher and Ordinary level, junior and senior cycle students who are building confidence in programming, and beginners to advanced learners who want to develop strong coding skills or create impressive projects. I also teach adults who are upskilling or preparing to shift careers into software or game development, as well as young people interested in creative coding, game design, AI and interactive media. Lessons are tailored to each learner’s pace, goals and learning style, whether improving exam performance, building a portfolio, or learning for enjoyment.
