About Joao

I'm a passionate drummer and recording engineer (I specialise in mixing music for independent and signed artists).

On top of my experience as a teacher and as a session drummer, I have extensive experience on both sides of the glass (both as a drummer and recording engineer) and the stage (playing drums live and mixing FOH live shows).

This gives me an incredible advantage to be able to better prepare you for the stage and the studio, alongside developing your skills as a drummer.

I focus my teaching around systems - I am passionate about practicing as a subject and do a lot of research on that subject.

I studied with some of the best instructors in the world - Aaron Edgar, Anika Nilles, Benny Greb, Claus Hessler, Gabor Dorniye, Jojo Mayer and Ryan van Pooederoyen to name but a few.

About the lesson

I want to get you playing the drums and have fun as soon as possible, but I will also cover the foundations of everything to ensure you have the best possible start.

I strongly believe that skipping on a few essential bits are what leads drummers to long plateaus where they don't see improvement, or worse - injuries that prevent them from playing the drums!

This is why I cover:
- The gear we use, and how to set it up and maintain it.
- Correct Technique and Posture
- Really understand (musically) our role as drummers. Teach not only the "beats" but the why behind those.
- Cover necessary music theory to make your learning easier, but also allowing you to communicate with band mates and the engineers/producers better.

I only teach beginners and intermediate students at the moment, of any age.

For the younger students, I tend to go lighter on the theory side and try and explore music rather than systems. For more mature students, I work with systems and encourage the students to apply them to their favourite music.

Let's chat and figure out your goals on the drums. Even though I have a curriculum carefully prepared from years of lessons with world class educators, I will always tweak it so we can make progress towards what YOU want to play on the drums.
