About Sharon

I am a highly qualified and experienced piano teacher, holding a Masters in Advanced Performance with Distinction from the prestigious Royal College of Music, London (2005), where I also earned my Postgraduate Diploma and Bachelor of Music (Hons) degrees. As a performing soloist and chamber musician in the UK and abroad, I bring real-world experience and a deep understanding of music to my teaching.

Based in Weybridge, Surrey, I welcome dedicated students of all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced pianists. While I enjoy working with advanced students, I am always excited to nurture talented and serious learners at any level.

What kind of experience do you have?

In addition to my personal career as concert pianist and chamber musician, I have taught more than a hundred pupils (from beginners to professionals, including piano teachers) for more than 25 years, teaching them at distinguished public schools in London and in Hampshire, and also privately. They have all successfully performed at ABRSM exams, concerts, scholarships and auditions. Being an active performer as well as a teacher allows me to demonstrate accurately on the piano and inspire my pupils to a high level of piano playing.

Where and with whom did you train?

Since coming to London in 1999, I have had the privilege to work extensively with Andrew Ball, Irina Zaritskaya and Yonty Solomon, himself a pupil of Dame Myra Hess. I have also received many prestigious masterclasses and lessons in Belgium, England, Germany, Spain, in the U.S.A. and in Israel, playing for eminent artists such as Galina Egyazarova, John O'Conor, Pavel Gililov, Bernard Roberts, Joseph Banowetz, Oxana Yablonskaja, Emanuel Ax, Paul Badura-Skoda, and Murray Perahia.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

As a child, I was always drawn to music. I vividly remember listening to old children’s LPs about the lives of Bach and Mozart. My favourite movies were Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and later, Amadeus. Looking back, I realise those choices were driven by their beautiful music scores. After a somewhat bumpy start with both the piano and violin, I eventually returned to the piano. I developed a deep passion for it, primarily because of its vast and infinitely rich repertoire.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Classical music never tires me, though I generally prefer not to listen to anything on a continuous loop. Great music deserves fresh ears and focused attention.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

While I am a demanding teacher, I don't believe lessons should ever feel 'difficult'. My approach is to simplify complex challenges. By breaking down technical and musical hurdles into manageable steps, I ensure my students see consistent progress, which is the greatest source of motivation.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

The piano is undoubtedly one of the most challenging instruments to master. It requires total synchronisation of physical, mental, and emotional skills. Beyond the mechanics, the piano’s repertoire is uniquely rich; almost every great composer was an accomplished pianist who wrote their most profound works for the instrument. While the violin is also very challenging, the sheer volume and complexity of piano literature are unmatched.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Hard work and perseverance are the primary keys to success, along with a bit of luck. It is also important to acknowledge that because playing an instrument is a physical discipline, starting at an early age provides a clear advantage in developing muscle memory, agility and coordination.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Arcadi Volodos: He is simply my favourite pianist, and he seems like a very warm, genuine person to talk to.
Sir András Schiff: He is an incredibly thoughtful musician with an encyclopaedic knowledge of music history and repertoire.
Mitsuko Uchida: Her passion for music is infectious; she would surely inspire me to keep learning and evolving, just as she continues to do.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

The wisdom of the legendary Polish pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski perfectly captures the relentless commitment required to master the instrument. He famously distilled the necessity of daily discipline into a single, haunting observation: 'If I miss one day of practice, I notice it; if I miss two days, the critics notice it; and if I miss three days, the whole world knows it.' This serves as a constant reminder that mastery is not a permanent gift, but a living thing that must be nurtured through patient, daily practice.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I am very patient and believe in giving every student a fair chance to succeed. I am constantly looking for ways to improve my own teaching methods so that I can offer as much value as possible to my students.
