My teaching method is based on two principles, engagement and skill building. I initially employ a Socratic Method, working with the student to assess what their understanding of a subject, helping me understand the gaps in knowledge or skill that may be holding them back. I then move on to application, allowing students to use skills and techniques we have worked on to succeed on their own. I have a variety of age ranges from middle school, high school, to college students.
I recently graduated University of Oregon Magna Cum Laude with departmental honors, majoring in history, minoring in psychology and public health. I tutored in math, history, and psychology for two years while I attended De La Salle High School. At the University of Oregon I tutored for over 3 years in writing and social studies. I created study plans, conducted individual sessions, and reviewed papers for my students. The average grade increase by students I tutored was over 15%.
I have always been passionate about tutoring and helping others. In high school I led multiple tutoring groups for AP and Honors classes I participated in. In college I volunteered at the University of Oregon tutoring center as a Social Sciences and writing tutor, working weekly to assist any students who came in. I believe given my academic background and previous work experience I am well equipped to be a superb tutor, assisting in standardized testing or social studies related classes.
As an undergraduate I had great academic success. I achieved a cumulative 3.92 GPA, graduating Magna Cum Laude with departmental Honors. As a student I firmly believed in the power of tutoring and organization. I often utilized free tutoring services and constantly went to office hours. I believe a good tutor can alter the trajectory of a struggling student, not only helping them learn a subject but also equip them with the skills necessary to succeed in any academic setting.
Writing and reading is a skill I have fine-tuned through my coursework and work experience. As an Intern at the San Francisco Public Defenders Office and as a Law Clerk I often edited, published, and wrote briefs. As an undergraduate I wrote many papers, including a 40-page Honors thesis with original research on the impact of the 1970s Black Panther Health Clinics in Portland. I worked as a writing and social sciences tutor for 2 years at University of Oregon, learning the best way to assist other students. On standardized testing I have a firm grasp of what is required to succeed in writing and reading sections. I scored a 35 on the ACT Reading section in 2016, recently scoring a 164 (90th percentile) on the October LSAT, where I utilized deductive reasoning and comprehension skills.
I have a strong grasp on all Social Science related subjects. At University of Oregon, I was awarded a faculty recognition award for outstanding work as an undergraduate, additionally I received a monetary award for achieving a 4.0 History GPA over 3 years. I have taken courses in American, European, German, and World History. I also volunteered as a tutor during my time at University of Oregon, tutoring others on a variety of Social Science related subjects. Doing individual appointments, teaching students subjects and assisting in creating lesson plans for weeks, months, or an entire term.
I believe my interpersonal skills, resourcefulness, and care for other will make me a great fit for this position. Please contact me further if you have any questions or concerns regarding anything.
