About Victoria

Teaching saxophone is about more than technique; it’s about connecting with music emotionally and creatively. I focus first on building a strong technical foundation—breath support, embouchure development, posture, finger coordination, and rhythm—to ensure students develop healthy habits for sustainable playing. Tone quality is a continuous emphasis, with lessons covering articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and vibrato to shape expressive and compelling performances. Music theory and ear training are introduced alongside repertoire and improvisation, helping students deepen their musical understanding naturally. Improvisation is a cornerstone of my teaching; I break it down into manageable parts like scales, motifs, and rhythmic variations, guiding students toward confident, spontaneous playing. Lessons are personalized to match each student’s goals and musical preferences, whether they lean toward jazz, blues, pop, or classical styles. I incorporate technology tools such as recording devices, loopers, and play-along tracks to enhance learning and keep practice engaging. A highlight of my teaching has been helping a student overcome intonation challenges to become a confident solo performer in their jazz ensemble. I aim to foster an encouraging environment where students develop technical skills, artistic expression, and a lifelong love for saxophone music.

About the lesson

I believe that teaching saxophone is about more than just notes and technique—it’s about helping students find their own voice within the rich tradition of jazz. My approach begins with building a strong technical foundation focusing on breath control, embouchure, finger coordination, articulation, and tone quality.

These basics ensure that students develop a healthy, sustainable approach to playing. Yet, technique alone cannot capture the soul of jazz, so I place equal importance on developing aural skills and musical intuition. Ear training is integrated into each lesson through exercises that improve interval recognition, chord quality identification, and rhythmic precision. Improvisation is central to my teaching philosophy; I encourage students to experiment with scales, modes, and harmonic frameworks to create spontaneous musical ideas.

Together, we study the solos of jazz masters, deconstructing their phrasing, dynamics, and emotional storytelling to inform our own playing. I also leverage technology—using recording software and play-along tracks—to enhance practice effectiveness and provide constructive self-evaluation tools. The greatest reward is seeing students progress from hesitant soloists to confident musicians who communicate authentically through their instrument. My goal is to create a nurturing, stimulating environment where creativity and technical skill grow hand in hand.
