About Noemí

ABOUT ME

I’m Noemí. I come from a small town near Madrid — although not that small anymore; more than 30,000 people live there now. Over the last few years I’ve moved between Spain, Malta and Italy, for work and for pleasure. A summer trip to see friends turned into staying in Gozo indefinitely.

Languages have always come more easily to me than numbers, I’ll admit that. At the same time, I’ve always liked helping other people understand things. Yup, I was that classmate who shared notes and met you in the library for the subject that was giving you trouble. Those two things became one of the ways I earn a living: teaching.

I’ve taught English as a second language to more than fifty Spanish-speaking students. Spanish has been more of a sideline, but in a way I enjoy it more. English I love; Spanish simply feels like home.

WHO THESE LESSONS ARE FOR

Adults in Gozo (or from Malta) who want to learn or improve their Spanish for whichever reason: an exam, work, travel, a partner, or just the pleasure of another language.

Beginners are welcome; so is anyone who “did a bit at school” and went quiet.

WHY LEARNING SPANISH

- It’s spoken in some twenty countries, by hundreds of millions of people. Learning Spanish is a way into those places that isn’t a guidebook.
- It’s also one of the richest languages in literature. Spaniards grow up with the we’re not a country of scientists. Our writers, though... that’s another story.
- And it isn’t one Spanish. Madrid, Seville and Oviedo don’t sound the same. Either does the Spanish of the Americas. The point where you start to hear that is, for me, where it gets interesting.

MY APPROACH TO TEACHING LANGUAGES

- No language is ever mastered by staying quiet until you sound perfect. From my own experience, I know that languages are learned by feeling lost in conversations, taking way too long to form a response, stammering through sentences before finding your rhythm, and making a million mistakes. It's all part of the process. Three key things are needed: patience, a bit of shamelessness, and repetition.

- Grammar and vocabulary are essentials. I'm quite old-school when it comes to this. But, trust me: understanding grammar pays off. Even if building a solid theoretical foundation doesn't sound too thrilling, it will save you hours of confusion.
