About Juan

I'm Peruvian, born and raised, and I've been teaching Spanish for 15 years. Most of that time has been spent with adults from the US who arrive frustrated, convinced they're "bad at languages," and leave a few months later having real conversations. Watching that shift never gets old for me.

I grew up hearing that Peruvian Spanish is one of the clearest accents in Latin America. I didn't think much of it until I started teaching and students kept telling me they finally understood what people were saying. That's when I realized the accent I was born with is actually one of the most useful things I can offer you.

What I care about is how you feel when you speak. Not whether you got the subjunctive right. Confidence comes first, accuracy follows. So my classes are mostly you talking, me listening, and both of us laughing when something comes out wrong. I correct you, but I never make you feel small for it.

Outside of teaching, I'm a regular person. I like traveling, I play badminton, and I've spent enough time around US culture to know what confuses you and why. If you tell me a story about your week, I'll actually be interested.

You've studied Spanish for years. You can read it, pass a quiz, order coffee. But when a real person starts talking at normal speed, or when you have to answer, your mind goes blank. The words are in there. They just won't come out.

That's not a talent problem. Most classes teach you about Spanish instead of training you to survive in it. You memorize rules, then freeze the second there's no script.

That's the part I work on.

I'm a native Peruvian with 15 years of experience helping US students go from "I know Spanish" to "I actually speak it." Peru has one of the clearest, most neutral accents in Latin America, so you learn Spanish people actually understand. I'm not here to lecture you through a textbook. Think of me more as a coach. We talk, you make mistakes, I correct you kindly, and you build the habit of responding instead of freezing.

Here's one to try. When you don't know a word, don't stop and don't switch to English. Describe it instead. Say "la cosa que usas para…" ("the thing you use to…") and finish the idea. It keeps you talking, and nine times out of ten the other person will hand you the exact word you were missing. You learn it instantly and the conversation never dies.
