About Shawn

Over the course of 6 years teaching piano and mentoring more than 3000 students, I have developed a philosophy that balances technical mastery with creative freedom and expressive depth. I teach foundational skills like finger independence, rhythm, sight-reading, and hand coordination with a focus on precision and clarity, while encouraging expressive playing through phrasing, dynamics, and tone color. I include music theory and improvisation to enhance students’ musical understanding and encourage originality. Each student receives customized lessons that align with their goals and preferred styles, from classical to jazz to contemporary genres. One of the most rewarding experiences in my teaching career was supporting a student who was initially intimidated by performing but eventually gained the confidence to present their work in a recital, showing how personal growth and musical achievement go hand in hand. I emphasize the importance of goal-setting and structured practice to help students take ownership of their development. Ultimately, my mission is to inspire students to become confident, creative musicians who carry their love of piano and music throughout their lives.

About the lesson

Teaching piano is an exciting and deeply fulfilling endeavor for me because it means helping students develop a lifelong relationship with music. I believe in combining strong technical foundation work with creative exploration and personal expression. My lessons focus on proper posture, finger strength and agility, rhythmic precision, and reading fluency, but these technical skills are always practiced in the context of music the student loves. I introduce theory gradually and practically—scales, chords, and rhythm are not abstract concepts but tools that open doors to understanding and creativity.

I encourage improvisation, composition, and critical listening to help students become well-rounded musicians who play with both knowledge and feeling. I’ve seen shy students find their voice through creative exercises, and more advanced students grow in artistry by exploring diverse styles and challenging repertoire. I believe that music should inspire joy and curiosity, so I design lessons to be motivating and interactive, incorporating technology like recording and play-along tracks to keep students engaged and informed. Regular reflection and goal-setting are key components, helping students track their progress and build confidence. My ultimate aim is for students to not only master the piano but also develop musical sensitivity, creativity, and resilience that enrich their lives beyond the instrument.
