About Debra
Hello! I hold a Bachelor of Science in Education from Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska, and am a licensed Special Education teacher for grades K-12. With over 17 years of experience, I have had the privilege of working with students from kindergarten through middle school who have learning, behavioral, and emotional disabilities. My experience includes both small group settings and 1:1 instruction, which allows me to adapt my teaching approach to meet each student's unique needs. I am truly passionate about helping students recognize their progress over time. One of the most fulfilling parts of my work is guiding students to see where they started and the strides they've made toward their goals. Every bit of growth builds confidence, and I am committed to creating a supportive environment that encourages each student to reach their full potential. I look forward to helping new students on their educational journey!

Each of my tutoring sessions follows a structured, student-centered format designed to support learning and engagement. I begin every lesson by clearly reviewing the objective so students know exactly what we are working toward. This helps set a clear focus and builds a sense of purpose from the start.
The teaching phase of the lesson includes three key components: modeling, guided practice, and independent practice. I first demonstrate the skill or concept, then work alongside the student with support, and finally allow the student to apply what they've learned independently. This gradual release approach promotes both confidence and mastery.
At the end of each session, I incorporate a brief informal assessment to check for understanding and guide future instruction.
As a licensed teacher with experience working with students with disabilities, I also adapt each session based on individual learning styles, preferences, and needs. I incorporate student choice, offer rewards and positive reinforcement, and use a variety of strategies to ensure lessons are accessible, engaging, and meaningful for every learner.
