About Charmian
Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Ethnomusicology from UCLA, I anchor my instruction in academic study. Music is a language learned through the ears first. I grew up in Appalachia surrounded by family pickin parties.
Those early moments define how I play today. My 9 years of experience include working with absolute beginners, adults, kids, and hobbyists. I teach them to hear the tune before they see the page.
Classical repertoire and scales balance out the raw tradition. It works. I love the way old melodies connect us to the past. Teaching is my primary way of keeping those tunes breathing.

Intonation issues often plague new players. Sound must be true. We spend time on posture and hold to ensure your body stays relaxed during practice.
I provide custom scale and etude sheets for each student to solidify these foundations. We tackle spiccato and staccato bowing through simple folk patterns. Rhythm and timing emerge naturally when you listen to the pulse.
Ear training is at the core of our session flow. We incorporate classical repertoire alongside traditional fiddle tunes. You will see how these techniques help your playing. We look at the music as a conversation between us.
