About Martha

Hello, I'm Martha, and I have just graduated with a 'Double Starred First' (Class I with Distinction) from Trinity Hall, one of the oldest colleges at Cambridge University--where I am now undertaking postgraduate study. I love my subject, and find myself particularly interested in where science and literature find common ground, for example, in thinking about poetry and climate change. In both final and first year, I ranked first out of the 183 people in my cohort, and was awarded twelve prizes from the University, English Faculty and College over my time there. I also achieved four A*s at A-Level, in English Literature, Biology, Geography and an EPQ.

I have tutored English literature and supported Oxbridge admissions for over two years, and am enjoying seeing progress in my students while they discover a real enjoyment for their subject. In addition to this, I have volunteered with the Oxbridge Launchpad as a mentor, supporting students towards applying to Oxford or Cambridge, and taking part in Oxbridge Launchpad's mock interview week. I have also gained valuable knowledge of the Oxbridge application process by working as a Trinity Hall Student Ambassador for 3 years, supporting with access webinars, open days, interviews, exams, and residentials.

My lessons are for students working towards their GCSE or A Level in English Literature, or those who are looking to apply to Oxford or Cambridge and wish to have support with personal statements, interviews, or the ELAT exam, all of which I have recent experience of. I am keen to enthuse others with the passion I have found for literature, broadening horizons, and opening up new opportunities, as well as making Oxbridge appear a more accessible place!

About the lesson

With recent experience of sitting A level and GCSE exams, I connect on a closer level with students to foster confidence in a subject I am truly passionate about. I know that learning in a school classroom doesn't always work for everyone, so I develop schemes of work from scratch based on my tutee's individual strengths, weaknesses, syllabus and exam board. Together, we will create a plan that will not only develop technique specific to the exam, but foster a wider appreciation for the subject which will inevitably bolster academic confidence. Formal yet conversational and hopefully fun, a typical lesson lasts 1 hour, in which the first five minutes are spent generally catching up, recapping difficult aspects of the previous lesson, and explaining how the lesson will work. In the main bulk of the lesson, we discuss textual extracts, plan answers to past paper questions, or practice essay structure. In the final few minutes, we summarise what has been learnt and answer any questions the student still has. My lessons are student-led, though, and I am always interested in what my tutee wants to learn or feels they would like more support with. Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all method, so my approach is flexible and specific to each person!
