About Emily

I think that geography is a wonderful subject to have a tutor for. This is because you develop skills that are so valuable for the rest of your life, such as thinking outside of the box, putting yourself in other people’s shoes, and communicating information effectively. Furthermore, although it’s great that there is infinite information and resources online, it can be a little overwhelming to tackle alone (Especially when it comes to the doom and gloom of climate change and other big challenges we deal with nowadays!). I love being a personal tutor because I can listen deeply to what each of my students thinks, helping them to jump each hurdle and find their voice. After many years of being a student myself, from my GCSEs through to my Masters, if there is anything I can do to help my students enjoy the process of learning and build confidence in their abilities, then it makes my day.

About the lesson

I try to keep lessons as organic as possible to shape them around the needs and learning styles of each student. However, there is a loose structure I tend to keep to: 1) A typical lesson will start with reflecting on what the student has learnt since our last meeting and identifying ways in which I can help (either now or in future lessons). 2) We will then move on to discuss the exercise that I had previously provided the student with at the end of the last lesson. This could be a question to answer, a news article to read, a summary of one of their case studies, etc. 3) Then we come into the main part of the session, which will be focused on a specific piece of content, or a skill, that the student has found challenging. I know me just talking to the screen is a bit dull, so I will keep this as interactive as possible! 4) Once the student feels happy with the content or skill, we will then complete a short game or exercise to practise and deepen the student's understanding. 5) The session will then be tied off with an exercise for the student to chew over for the following session.
