  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

Studies show that an average person experiences 60,000 thoughts daily, of which 75% are negative and 95% repetitive. Repetitive thoughts become our beliefs, constant beliefs shape our personality, and our personality determines our destiny. Therefore, if we can't stop the continuous flow of thoughts, it adversely affects our mental health, happiness, relationships, and quality of life. Meditation is the ability to cut through thoughts. It is a skill to achieve a state of no mind and no thought.

People often misunderstand meditation as an unamusing endeavor and hence avoid it. Over the past 20 years, I have taught meditation to more than 1,000 people. They have been able to reclaim their happiness, discover their true calling, improve their relationships, live in peace and tranquillity, progress professionally, and achieve spiritual growth.

My meditative journey began at the age of 21 in 2001. The initial experience struck me profoundly. For the first time, I was able to see myself as distinct from my social, political, religious, family, and peer conditioning. In the formative years of this journey, there was absolute discord between my outer reality and my unconditioned self. My interpretation of the teachings of spiritual masters drifted me from the material world. However, as time progressed, I endeavored and kept learning. Gradually, I was able to find a balance. Life, however, was never the same as before meditation because I found a new sense of freedom and could reorient myself to who I am.

Before I realised it, I was casually teaching my friends the art of mental relaxation and meditation. I also learnt that not everyone searches for freedom, and most find refuge in the status quo. After all, for them, a known devil is better than an unknown angel. But to the handful of others, I could guide them into bliss. Becoming this catalyst became my passion and identity. This journey began with teaching meditation for fun and has slowly metamorphosed into a lifetime obsession.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

The greatest motivation behind my choice to teach meditation is a lifelong desire to empower people to untangle their minds and elevate their lives. I revere Brahmarshi Pitamaha Patriji, the founder of the Pyramid Spiritual Societies Movement (PSSM), for introducing me to the most straightforward meditative technique, Anapanasati. He encouraged his students by saying, 'Anyone who has meditated is a master and qualified enough to teach it.' This helped me overcome my apprehension about teaching meditation. I am following this guidance and helping my students grow in all dimensions.
  • How does your work help society?

The world around us has changed rapidly. Technology has given us convenience but has also created inner turmoil. Our natural stress busters, like family, friends, sports, reading, walking, and trekking, have lost their significance. We have replaced them with X (Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and OTT platforms. This transition provides momentary stimulation and sensual gratification but also makes us depressed, isolated, and anxious.

Professional competition has taken away our relaxation. We are on a 24x7 treadmill-exhausted but reaching nowhere. Our jobs, professions, and businesses comfort us at the price of peace.

The more we live outside, the more we depart from our inner selves.

Meditation, in the initial stages, gives you relaxation, but when pursued regularly, it brings you closer to your authentic self. A meditator finds a pause, mental peace, mindfulness, alertness, and sensibility to reassess their situation, understand their needs, and reorient themselves. They live a wholesome life, enjoy pleasures responsibly, and live sustainably. They live more deeply, find happiness in simple things, and raise consciousness. They become better lovers, friends, and partners and perform better in their professions. All in all, they live a better life. I aim to help people in this transformation. Meditation is the best tool to achieve this.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

The one person I always look up to is the spiritual master Osho. I believe he lived a complete life where spiritual bliss complemented material comfort. He taught his followers to live on the razor's edge and put everything at stake to live a life of their choice. He practiced absolute freedom-a life free from dogma yet centered in consciousness. I teach the same principles to my students and find my bliss in their freedom.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I enjoy every moment of my life. I am 100% present in everything I do and with the person I am with. I tend to a vegetable garden at home, read on diverse subjects, and watch uplifting videos and movies. I like to keep books in my library. I cherish my morning cup of tea with my wife, playing with my son, and talking to my daughter. Every day, I strive to become a better son to my parents. I am a great listener and can listen on and on. I enjoy intimate conversations with my students. I love to trek and enjoy nature. As days pass, I find that my life becomes increasingly enjoyable.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

And there wasn't an entry barrier for new competitors. The competition was like a gladiator ring; each manufacturer tried to cut the others down, and everybody bled. The customers enjoyed this match, bargaining heavily, hardly paying on time, or returning the products. The future looked bleak.

A couple of years back, I asked my father to shut it down while I figured out my professional future. For a year, I studied Data Science, applied for some freelancing projects, and sought jobs as a business analyst. All of this was futile. Thus, one fine day, I decided to pack it up. This was the lowest period of my life, where I had nothing to look up to.

After a while, I realized that the only skill I had was the ability to teach meditation and help people relax. That, however, seemed like something other than a monetisable skill. One morning, over coffee, my friend Preeti gave me valuable advice to heed my IKIGAI (a Japanese word that means a reason to live), i.e., teaching meditation. This advice was a turning point, a beacon of hope in my darkest hour. Subsequently, during a chance meeting with a meditation master and life coach, Shreans Daga, I received words of wisdom: 'Start doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you will be doing the impossible.' These words resonated with me, igniting a spark of determination. The impact of their advice was profound, leading me to a path of fulfillment and success.

Since 2001, I have had many experiences leading my friends into meditation. I have been a highly regarded speaker at many events, attended numerous meditation retreats, and organized some. The idea of teaching meditation commercially had never crossed my mind. After receiving these two pieces of advice, I searched online for ways to teach meditation. I found an online teaching company called UrbanPro. I compiled my knowledge of meditation and created a brief course where I could teach basic concepts. I started as a small-time meditation teacher, charging pennies. Within a couple of months, I became the top meditation tutor on that platform, and there has been no looking back ever since. I am consistently ranked as the top meditation tutor on many online platforms. Destiny has a funny way of organizing your life and giving you direction.
