About Gretchen
I am doing what I love every day. Seeing students’ progress is my joy. The challenge for me is when a student is having a difficult time with something. My belief is that this is not the student’s problem, but that I need to find a different way to explain it that is relatable to them. The most exciting part of my day is seeing a student attain a technical skill that has been hard won. I am so proud of them. I started my professional music career over 15 years ago, which is when I opened my studio. I have played with local regional orchestras and done various freelance work. I coach the strings at two of the local high schools. I also served as a paid concertmaster for a community orchestra for 12 years. At California State at East Bay I graduated with a double major in music and computer science. A large portion of my musical training came post college. There is always something new to learn.

You are the most important part of the lesson. Lessons are customized to each student based on the belief that every student learns at a different pace and has different interests. I believe that a student will enjoy playing their instrument if they have some choice in what they are working on. For most students their assignment list will have a piece of my choice for constant progression in learning and a piece that they helped choose. The only thing that limits the choices is current skill level. Beginners don’t get as much choice, but will as soon as possible. This could be classical, anime, fiddle, Disney, Broadway or most anything else the student is interested in. Until a high intermediate level I use the Suzuki materials for a gradual learning progression. If it is appropriate to skip a piece I do that. If more practice at the same level is needed we will do that. The student’s needs are the center of the lesson.
Lessons are offered in three time lengths. Lessons are once a week. For a younger person I recommend a 30 minute lesson. Middle school through adults usually start with a 45 minute lesson. Advancing players move up to a 60 minute lesson. These are general starting places and can be adjusted as needed for the particular student.
The first lesson will be used for organization items. If the lesson is online we will check the sound and get an idea if the internet will work. For all lessons we will talk about instruments, acquisition and owned. The music that we will be learning will be discussed next. If you are experienced I will definitely want to know what you have been playing. Some people choose to buy some of the music and others would rather have it online. I will definitely be providing some music online. If appropriate we will talk about tuning and flash cards.

Gretchen is the most knowledgeable professional musician I’ve had the pleasure to know. She is very devoted to her students and has instructed some gifted players into advanced Academy. She is kind and caring and will do all she can to help you achieve your goals.
I have been taking lessons from Gretchen for almost three years now, starting with very little experience in music and playing viola. She helped me develop my musical abilities rapidly, and I am now able to enjoy playing high level music. She not only works with me through the music she gives me, but is also willing to help with any other music I am playing for my school music program and youth orchestra. When I have questions, I always feel comfortable asking them. If you are a motivated individual who wants to improve at violin or viola or is starting for the first time, I would recommend getting lessons from Gretchen!
