About Juan

As a mathematician of National University of Colombia currently pursuing a master's degree in applied mathematics at University of São Paulo, I bring both academic expertise and five years of experience tutoring children and teenagers of various ages and academic levels. My approach to tutoring is tailored, systematic, and designed to help students succeed in their mathematical journeys.

Over the past five years, I’ve worked with students of different ages and academic levels, from primary school children to university students. The results have been overwhelmingly positive: students often report not only improved grades but also increased confidence and enjoyment in learning mathematics. Seeing their progress and success is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching for me.

My ultimate goal as a tutor is to make mathematics accessible, engaging, and empowering for every student. With the right guidance and effort, I believe anyone can excel in math.

About the lesson

In the first session, I begin by discussing the subjects the student needs help with and identifying their goals. Whether it's improving grades, preparing for exams, or simply gaining a deeper understanding of mathematics, this initial conversation sets the foundation for our lessons. I also ask the student about their perceived weaknesses and challenges. Based on this information, I evaluate their current level of understanding and use this assessment to plan an approach that fits their needs. This evaluation determines the depth and duration of our lessons, which could range from a few focused sessions to a more extended program.

Each lesson is designed to build on the student's existing knowledge, starting with basic concepts and gradually progressing to more advanced topics. For instance:

1. Review and Warm-Up: We start with a brief review of the previous lesson and a warm-up exercise to refresh their memory and build confidence.

2. Core Content: The main part of the lesson focuses on the target topic, explained with clear examples and visual aids when needed. I adapt my teaching style to suit the student’s learning preferences—whether that involves hands-on problem-solving, step-by-step explanations, or conceptual discussions.

3. Interactive Practice: The student works through practice problems with my guidance. This interactive phase helps solidify their understanding and allows me to address any misconceptions immediately.

4. Wrap-Up and Homework: We summarize what we’ve covered, highlighting key takeaways. Depending on the student's availability and commitment, I assign exercises for independent practice to reinforce the material.

An important point is that every student learns differently, so I use various teaching techniques depending on their strengths, challenges, and goals. For example:

1. Visual learners: I incorporate diagrams, graphs, and visual representations.
2. Practical learners: I emphasize real-world applications to make concepts relatable.
3. Conceptual learners: I focus on theoretical understanding and derivations.
For students aiming for deep mastery or tackling advanced topics like calculus, linear algebra, optimization, or numerical analysis we might spend several lessons delving into each topic thoroughly.
