About Matthew
I am a professional freelance violist.
I hold the position of Sub-Principal Viola of the City of London Sinfonia and am a founding member of the prize winning Artesian Quartet.
As a freelancer I enjoy a very varied career.
I play with chamber orchestras including
Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Aurora Orchestra and
London Mozart Players;
symphony orchestras including
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic;
in the pit with Opera Holland Park,
Royal Ballet Sinfonia and English National Ballet;
as well as in the studio on music records and tv/film soundtracks.
Alongside performing I have a vast experience in teaching and outreach work to all ages in a variety of settings from hospital schools to care homes.
In this capacity I have worked for City of London Sinfonia, Trinity Laban, Orchestras for All, Orchestras Live and the Royal Academy of Music as well as privately.

I'm a firm believer that teaching makes me a better performer and performing makes me a better teacher.
I thoroughly enjoy going on a journey of discovery with students and I always want to make it as rewarding an experience for them as it is for me.
Alongside my passion for classical music I'm a big fan of jazz, latin, soul and blues music (to name a few genres!).
I believe that everyone can relate to music no matter the genre or background as it is a worldwide language that unites us all.
I have always enjoyed playing several instruments as this has opened up many enjoyable performing opportunities in a wide range of environments and genres.
For in person lessons I will make sure appropriate social distancing and safety measures are in place.
I am also very happy to teach online via Zoom or Skype.
