About Ho

Started swimming when I was 5 and YES I was that crybaby that was so very afraid of the water. As I grew older, it's only then I figured that patience was what my instructor had with me that made me progress and I'm so very grateful for that. I took up that sport ever since and was training competitively for more than 10 years. My life seems to be revolving a lot around water sports. During my university days, I was also training competitively for Dragonboat to compete in state and inter-club competitions. The biggest highlight was when my team was selected by the Ministry of Sports for the ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES Myanmar in 2018. All in all, swimming does not have to be scary. With great patience and the courage to take the first step, everyone can learn to swim! :)

  • What age did you start playing sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

Growing up in the mid 2000s, there's little to no social media and electronics. Back then, as a kid, our life and soul revolved a lot around outdoor activities. We would play in the muds, football & badminton with our neighbors, and even perform stunts on our bicycles. I was a particularly active kid where as soon as I learned to walk at the age of 2, my parents bought me a tricycle - I was instantly filled with euphoria !
  • What are your favorite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you'd still like to discover?

There is no doubt that my favorite sport is swimming ! I started swimming at the age of 6. Funnily enough, it wasn't a sport that I particularly liked because of how much I feared the water. Thinking back, the amount of times I've cried because I was so scared of the water made me feel grateful for how far I've come. It was my mom and swimming's instructor's hard effort that made me love swimming. I picked up that sport ever since and was training 4 times a week at the age of 8 until my teenage years.

Aside from my love for swimming, surfing and diving is another sport that I'd love to discover and try ! The feeling of being around and in water is unexplainable - it is meditative.
  • What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue your sport?

The moment of realization that I've overcome my fear for waters, the state of freedom, and the goosebumps I've had at that point of time of knowing how much I could achieve and learn more if i stick to it longer enough.
  • Do you have a sporting achievement that you're particularly proud of?

The hardest part was attending and training 4 times a week, however the feeling of accomplishment when I was on podiums for most of the competitions made me think, "hard work definitely pays". Other than that, I was also particularly proud for being able to compete in ASEAN University Game 2018 for Dragonboat sport as it was a tough year for me where I had to face challenges in the aspects of my family, finances, and academics.
  • How have your achievements and challenges made you a better sportsperson?

Achievement is a gauge of how much effort you put in work and nothing beats discipline and consistency. It does not only make me realize as a sportsperson that if you want something you need to put the time to work for it. Most importantly, the key is trust and patience.

On the other hand, no one likes losing, or the feeling that you are faced with obstacles - constantly thinking and stressing what can be done to solve it. Challenges are inevitable. Personally, I believe that challenges in every aspect of life is what makes every win in your life worth celebrating. Challenge is an objective teacher that does not discriminate. It will tell you transparently what you can do to better yourself.
  • If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

Cristiano Ronaldo. Growing up with humble beginnings, I truly admire his mindset for he is able to make it this far as a professional athlete. I'd ask him:
"Juggling academics, football, and financial struggles can be demanding. How did you manage to balance these aspects of your life? Were there moments when you questioned your pursuit of a football career due to the challenges you faced?"
  • How do you help people stay motivated?

Encourage a culture of positivity by highlighting and reinforcing positive behaviors and achievements. This can be done through verbal praise and recognition of small wins.

Furthermore, I believe in providing feedback in a constructive and supportive manner. When offering suggestions for improvement, I love to focus on specific behaviors and outcomes that is contributive rather than criticizing individuals. This helps maintain a positive tone.
  • What makes you a Superprof in sports?

Other than my many years of training in this field, the greatest lesson I've learned from my fear of swimming and how far I've progressed is 'patience'. I'm a firm believer that patience and understanding is what all students need to effectively learn not just swimming but every other thing in life.
