About Vaaimamao
Talofa lava and greetings to you all. My name is Vaaimamao (Mao) Mauga. I am a teacher and have been teaching for 5 years now. My experience in the diaspora Samoan community in Aotearoa has equipped me with the tools and necessities to be able to teach the Samoan language to students from all walks of life, ages ranging from 5 years old to 73 years old. I have been a Samoan Beginners Language course facilitator since 2022 and still going. Adding to that I am currently a Samoan bilingual faiaoga at the intermediate school where I currently teach. It is such a joy to see students from all walks of life achieve and exceed their goals. In 2025, I am excited to announce that I will be introducing an extended version of the Samoan beginners language course via online. It will be a great challenge for me to reach potential students in the broader community of Aotearoa and encourage the use of the gagana Samoa and understanding of the culture in everyday life. Foundations of the basic Samoan Language Students will begin learning basic Samoan words, phrases, and cultural practices. They will practice listening, speaking, reading, and simple writing tasks to communicate in everyday situations. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Use basic greetings, farewells, and polite expressions. 2. Introduce themselves and ask someone’s name. 3. Recognize numbers 1–10 and simple colors. 4. Identify simple classroom objects and common places. 5. Understand and use simple phrases related to food, family, and daily activities. 6. Demonstrate respect for basic Samoan cultural customs

Expression of Interest – Samoan Beginners Level Classes (2026) Talofa lava! In 2026, I will be delivering Samoan Beginners Level Classes across communities within a 50km radius of my residence (West Auckland). This program runs over 3 days, with 2-hour sessions each day, and is designed to introduce participants to the Samoan language in a supportive and engaging environment. If your community is interested in hosting this program, please feel free to get in touch to express your interest.
