About Adam John
My name is Adam John Mettam, and I want to teach because I enjoy sharing knowledge and get a great deal of satisfaction from seeing my students progress. I always set clear targets and learning objectives so my students can see their own progress. I believe that praise is very important for motivation and progress. I have taught online for a few years and led a course at Sheffield Hallam University, and did some teacher training on student-centred learning online. All of my teaching is activity-based, and I try to make it fun. I am a keen linguist and speak French, German, conversational Japanese, and Thai. I have taught in Japan, Thailand, Myanmar, and, of course, the UK. Ilove to teach and travel.

I am a passionate, enthusiastic teacher. I like to make lessons fun and activity-based. I believe an ideal lesson should be an hour with presentation, practice, and production. Writing and reading should be done as homework tasks offline. I am a keen linguist, and I am fluent in French and German. I also have good knowledge of Japanese and some Thai. My understanding of language learning has enabled me to empathise with my students and understand the challenges they face and their motivations. In addition, I possess a Master’s in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, which includes a module on designing and delivering English as an Additional Language and English for Academic Purposes programmes. My dissertation focused on the negotiation of identity through language. On graduation, I lectured in Education Studies at De Montfort University, UK. I taught a range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Simultaneously, I taught English for
Academic Purposes at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. At Sheffield Hallam, I was very proud to be nominated for the ‘Inspirational Teacher of the Year Awards 2015’. In 2017, returned to teaching in the independent school sector: I took a position as part of the founding team at an international school in
Bangkok. As Head of ESL, I established the department. Following this, I moved to Dulwich College in Myanmar, where I took a position as a whole-school English as an Additional Language Teacher and Secondary French Teacher. I then went on to teach English for Specific Purposes in Automobile
Engineering at Dublin University/Xi’an University in China (online from the UK). Most recently, I have been teaching supply roles in English Literacy and French to Key Stages 3 and 4 in the UK. During the summer of 2025, I took part in a residential summer school. Then, toured Thailand and Laos.
