About Eli

At my core, I am a composer. For me, music is about storytelling through emotion, setting a scene, and pulling in listeners into an atmosphere. Through my jazz studies, I have accumulated knowledge and techniques from a rich musical tradition. Studying jazz has opened my musical ear, allowing me to pursue a wide range of interests. From writing and playing for jazz combos and big bands, to pop, R&B, rock, and metal groups, all the way to composing scores for theatrical productions, film, and media, I have been able to traverse a wide musical landscape. I continue to explore my interests and hone my craft with one of my many guiding principles in mind: technique facilitates creativity.

Currently, I am completing my last year as an undergraduate at the University of Colorado Boulder, in the Thompson Jazz studies program. In the Fall of 2022, I studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for the semester as an exchange student to explore a new part of the world and meet and connect with new musicians. I believe that novel experiences in life are a significant driver of creativity, hence my decision to embark on this wonderful adventure to Australia! I recently returned to Colorado to finish my degree, after which I plan to continue living a life full of writing and performing.

Why do I want to teach? The semester before flying to Australia, I had the opportunity to give a few piano lessons to a young child in my parent’s neighborhood. The feeling of seeing improvement in him was indescribably positive, and even more so was seeing his passion for what he was learning grow, especially when it is something so important in my own life. I decided that I want to explore this side of the music world more deeply, and continue passing down what I have learned. This curiosity has led to me teaching various young-adult-aged students, and I find the experience rewarding for both myself as well as the students.

About the lesson

In our first meeting, we will discuss what your current goals are in your musical development. Then, we will develop a personalized plan tailored to your strengths, with highly practical exercises/assignments directly related to your goals. Whether you seek to advance your creative expressivity, your performance technique, your musical ear/repertoire knowledge, or any combination/extension of these areas, we will work collaboratively to explore your curiosities. Additionally, we will approach music in a holistic manner, so that you will be more equipped to do your own exploration and self-teaching outside of lessons and in the future.
