About Dave

Dave is currently the Sound Design subject coordinator at TAFE (Ultimo) and has a wealth of industry knowledge of hardware and software from over 12 years of experience working at Store DJ. Prior to this, he was the music history and sound design coordinator and lead assessor at Abbey Road Institute and had previously been a private tutor for 10 years. Dave has many credits from various parts of the music industry, here are a few: - Provided various key compositions for VIVID - Mix and Mastering Engineer for CR2 and Intech Records - Various releases leading to selection from EMC as a featured up and coming artist - Sound Programmer for one of Sony Music's most prolific songwriters - Various compositions on Universal Music Production Library Dave holds a Bachelor in Music (Composition), Bachelor in Music (Audio Engineering), a Diploma in Training & Assessment, and a valid Working With Children Check. He is committed to being a high-level professional, educator, and ensuring a safe and inclusive teaching environment. Whether you're a beginner looking to get started or an experienced musician looking to level up your skills, Dave will help you on your way to realizing your goals. His motto for teaching is: "LEARN, REALIZE, CREATE"

Business hours: 10:30am - 1:30pm on weekends, 1:30pm-4pm Thursdays.

About the lesson

Prior to teaching at schools such as Abbey Road Institute, Liveschool, and currently at TAFE (Ultimo), Dave provided private lessons at Store DJ in Sydney. During this time, his focus has always been realizing what the student wanted to achieve musically, whether it was to become a music producer, a solo artist, a DJ, an audio engineer or a live act, he has helped many to pursue their goals. With various artists who have gone on to become musical professionals (VNCII, Leotrix, SUE, The Vampires, Sparrows to name a few), his knowledge, passion, adaptability and approachability will help you with your own vision and dreams. Dave specializes in producing music with different DAWs (Ableton Live is his main software of choice), sound design, DJing and mixing and can instill production theory, fast workflows, creative support and bringing joy to the whole process! Dave will teach via Chrome Remote Desktop and will help you no matter what level you are at and not assuming any knowledge. Whether you want to focus on arrangement, mixing, creating your own sounds, recording, Dave has a program for you and will provide summary notes after each lesson.

When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
I have been listening to electronic music since the age of 5 thanks to my cousin’s foray into Napster. I was hooked the moment I heard dance music, and the moment I heard Paul van Dyk’s Amnesia closing set live on Nova 96.9FM, I knew I wanted to be a DJ and producer. Unfortunately, I do not play anything beyond my mouse!
Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
I could listen to Burial on repeat. These days would be Sully or Imanu.
Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.
I love diving into modulation and automation. As I believe it is the key to interesting electronic music, I typically deconstruct popular songs and show how those artists create their sounds.
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
The first thing I can think of is the modern DAW. It is the modern-day musical instrument that you can
"play." DAWs are being constantly updated with new features, and everyone has a say on what is the best way to use them. My approach is to show different angles and try to reveal the mindsets to how people use DAWs proficiently. The first hurdle is to figure out what tools do they have and where they are located. Next you need to understand the mechanics behind recording audio, sequencing MIDI, and finally engineering your ideas to get a high-quality result.
What are your keys to success?
A common theme is self-doubt. Whether it is writer's block or fear of an artist's ability to express themselves, I find the best way is to keep things simple and create binary choices to help build momentum.
Another key to success is a big-picture mindset. It is so easy to get bogged down by the vast amount of techniques and technical jargon. Ultimately you have to remember that you are expressing yourself and creating a moment in time, so you MUST enjoy the process! It beats the typical day job :)
