About Mary-Jennifer
My name is Mary-Jennifer McDowell, Jen for short. I have been teaching and tutoring for as long as I can remember. I have a french Masters degree (B.A.Honours) in English Language and literature, a degree in Art (D.E.U.G. des Beaux Arts) and a PGCE Primary with Art as specialist subject. I have taught children from 4 to 16, adults too. I have worked in primary schools full time and in secondary schools too, in England and in France. I currently work part-time as a tutor for foster/looked after children teaching them primary Maths and English and I tutor french conversation and writing to 3 other students. I also work part-time in my local grammar school, the most popular grammar school in our area of Kent, and assist the head of languages and language teachers in the department as well as cover teach whenever they need me to. It can be any secondary subject although french from Y7 to Y13 most of the time. Teaching is a vocation for me, always has been. I am a natural teacher but I am also very patient, engaging, I love to listen not just teach/talk and I always try to make it fun and feel like a natural experience. If you come out of any of my lessons not feeling satisfied and happy that you have learned something but that it's also been enjoyable, then I did not do my job properly (or it just wasn't me you were speaking to!).

After 30 years teaching and tutoring all levels, ages and subjects, I have a very simple and honest approach which works. Our first meeting is crucial as it is our opportunity to meet, get to know one another and mostly for me to assess the student's needs and wishes. It is also important for the student to get a feel for who I am and how I teach. If we both feel that we are the right match and if I know that I can help this person with the knowledge and skills that I have, then we discuss the whens and hows. It becomes a relationship after all and all students are different so lessons are tailored to you.
