About Aoife

Believe it or not, although bright, I was not the most confident student at school; there were some key teachers who helped me to excel. My English teacher, Mr. Eager, cultivated my love of writing, and my Irish teacher, Ms. O'Mahoney, showed me how building mutual trust and respect with students leads to positive outcomes.

During my own teaching practicum, I worked one-to-one with a boy who had missed a lot of schooling. At 14, I taught him the alphabet, and we did work on phonics together. His reaction when these things clicked into place for him will stay with me forever.

I love being in the classroom and the rewards it brings, but I also love working one-to-one with students and seeing them light up when they grasp something they had thought impossible.

I tutored throughout my career in the UK, but I stepped away from it when I moved here to focus on learning the curriculum and settling into a new education system. Now that I am settled and confident, I am eager to support students one-to-one once more, so please get in touch!

About the lesson

My lessons are typically an hour, but this can be adapted to meet students' needs.

I usually begin with a hook or a recall task based on the previous lesson. The body of each lesson is chunked into learning objectives, with teaching of the material using a range of different methods and short, followed by 'low-stakes' assessment of understanding. Each learning objective builds on the previous one. Each lesson closes with a short plenary task to pull together the lesson's content and, where appropriate, the setting of a home learning task.

I studied English Literature and History at NUI Galway in Ireland, and was then invited back to do my Postgraduate Diploma in Education there also. Immediately after graduating, I moved to the UK and taught there for 12 years. In 2023, I moved to New Zealand, teaching first in Auckland, and then in the Rodney region, before finally settling in the Bay of Plenty. This is my fourth year teaching in New Zealand.

I am available to teach Year 9 and 10, NCEA Level 1 and NCEA Level 2, and can adapt my lessons for a diverse range of learning needs and abilities.
