About Harriet
I’m Harriet, a fully qualified English teacher, former secondary school teacher, and experienced local tutor.
I trained at UCL’s Institute of Education (ranked #1 globally for education for over a decade) and taught English and Drama at an Ofsted "Outstanding" North London secondary school. Over the years, I’ve designed curriculum schemes of work, led exam prep, and helped students consistently outperform their predicted grades.
My day job is as the Head of Marketing and Communications for the English-Speaking Union (ESU); an international education charity specializing in developing communication, public speaking, and leadership skills in young people. This work keeps me at the forefront of modern communication techniques and reinforces my passion for helping young people find their voice, articulate ideas clearly, and build lifelong critical thinking skills and confidence.
Before running my own classroom, I worked as a Special Educational Needs (SEND) Teaching Assistant, supporting learners with autism, speech and language needs, and selective mutism. I believe that good SEND teaching is simply good teaching, meaning every student gets structured, clear, and highly accessible guidance.
Whether building core literacy skills or targeting top GCSE grades, I bring a unique mix of high-level educational expertise, SEND inclusivity, and real-world communication strategies to every lesson.

English shouldn't feel like a weekly battle over homework. My goal is simple: demystify the subject, raise grades, and give you your family time back.
How we work together:
- Demystifying Mark Schemes: We mark written work together in real time. Students stop guessing what examiners want and learn to break down GCSE criteria with total clarity.
- Targeted Exam Technique: We map sessions directly to your child's exam board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR), focusing on essay structure, literary analysis, and practical writing strategies.
- No Two Lessons The Same: With years of experience teaching 360+ secondary students a week and supporting SEND learners, I adapt every session live to match your child's energy, processing style, and confidence on the day.
- Actionable Feedback: You’ll never be in the dark. After every session, I provide clear, concise progress notes so parents and students always know what’s improving and what's next.
Whether your child is struggling with foundational literacy skills or pushing for a Grade 8/9 at GCSE, I build a calm, encouraging environment where high expectations meet genuine support.

Harriet was recommended by my friend who is a science teacher.
She is a well organised and reliable English tutor.
Harriet taught GCSE English to my son who was having difficulties with the subject. She was extremely helpful getting our son to achieve the required grade.
She is friendly, approachable and was able to engage and focus our son.I first met Harriet when teaching at my local secondary school and was immediately impressed by her warm, empathetic and confident manner with her students. Our son had an active dislike of English, so we turned to Harriet for help. She was brilliant from the start, and the biggest compliment we can give is that our son started “enjoying” his sessions (his words) with Harriet and his complaining turned to confidence, with him ultimately achieving a top grade. Without hesitation, we would recommend Harriet as a tutor, for her skill and ability to communicate with students.
Harriet has tutored my two sons for the gcse English and she really is a wonderful teacher. She’s kind, patient, caring, well-informed and dedicated. I cannot recommend her highly enough and wish you a successful tutoring journey!
