About Everest

Generally I keep a relaxed, trusting atmosphere in the classroom. My priority is helping you learn how to develop your artistic voice - and I can only do that if you're comfortable enough to talk through your process and your sticking points.

In my own art, I love play. My favorite ways to learn involve making the process silly. An exciting project can be stressful, and that's okay! But it's also good to practice not worrying so hard all the time. Although I usually draw, my watercolor practice has been all about that sort of therapeutic approach to letting go. The piece can have its own life, and we can have fun with it.

About the lesson

I've been teaching for 15 years, and art exclusively for 8! My students usually like to draw characters and/or stories, and that's where I thrive.

My classes usually start with a brief (~10 minute) theory lesson or discussion before a longer project. Art is best learned through practice! So we'll discuss a topic, use it as a jumping-off point, and then keep working on the prompt and other useful art tips as we go. My topics are based in key aspects of art and illustration, things like visual storytelling, character design, composition, etc.

With most students I aim for projects to take about 10 hours of work, though of course that depends on the age, skill level, and attention span involved. One priority for me is working with the needs of my students, in whatever direction.

My favorite part of teaching is helping an artist find their niche! Our projects will be flexible as we figure out your strengths and interests in art. Sometimes that will mean different topics or methods, and sometimes it'll mean exploring entire new media - we'll find out together.

As to skill, you'll probably get the most out of working with me if you're an early or intermediate artist of any age. As to personality matches, I try to be easygoing and safe for everyone. I've worked with plenty of students who are shy or neurodivergent. I'm also non-binary and have found that a lot of queer kids seem to appreciate working with a queer adult. :)

The travel fee is variable depending on how far, how many trains I'll need to take, and how much equipment I'll need to bring.

Online and in-person rates are currently the same while I get a feeling for online teaching, may re-assess soon.
