About Michael

I am passionate about Mathematics, Science and understanding how the world around me works. I have a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Bath and a Master's degree in Theoretical Physics from Durham University. I also did A Levels in Maths, Physics, Biology, Geography and an AS Level in Chemistry (achieving A grades in all subjects - this was before the A star grade had been introduced). I love to teach and discuss fascinating ideas with others. When tutoring, I have two main goals: 1. Most obviously, to help students gain knowledge and understanding of the relevant subject material, and achieve the grades they aspire to in their courses, whether it be an A star grade or a C grade. 2. To hopefully develop confidence and self-belief in the student, and encourage their curiosity and thirst for acquiring new skills and knowledge in their future lives. I am acutely aware that there is a broad spectrum in terms of abilities, confidence and interest level in Maths and Physics. With this in mind I do my best to ensure that lessons are a friendly, non-judgemental place, where ideas can be freely exchanged without fear of judgement. As for myself, I consider myself a lifelong learner. In addition to teaching Maths and Physics online, I am currently learning computer science and programming, in preparation for what I hope will be a career in the tech industry. I am particularly interested in artificial intelligence, and particularly the problem of reducing the negative societal impacts of present and future technologies (such as social media machine learning algorithms). I also enjoy coding, so may become a programmer instead!

About the lesson

I am a graduate with a Theoretical Physics degree. I am currently looking to tutor anybody that is working towards GCSE or A Level Mathematics (or the equivalent), regardless of age, confidence or attainment level. I have experience teaching Mathematics at GCSE and A level, including working with struggling students, particularly in my role as a volunteer tutor for "The Rendezvous", a charitable organisation based in Somerset that provides free Maths and English tuition to those that have struggled in a traditional school environment. I have taught students with additional learning challenges (such as Dyslexia and Dyscalculia). Lessons are typically an hour long, and are conducted online. I am a flexible teacher, and will readily adapt my approach to suit the interests and abilities of the student. I can accommodate those that need help with a particular topic or syllabus, as well as to assist with preparations for a specific exam. I know that many people find Maths and Physics difficult or intimidating. So it is important to me that I create a friendly, non-judgemental atmosphere. I strongly encourage the free exchange of ideas during lessons. It is particularly important to ask questions! This is how we learn. Typically I would start a lesson by explaining an idea or concept, and then illustrate it by working through several examples. I might then have the student work through a few more examples with my help (as needed). I believe that examples are essential for understanding a concept (whether it be integration in Calculus, or Electrical fields in Physics). I usually set homework at the end of each lesson. However, as previously stated, I work with the student to find an approach that is complementary to their learning style.

Michael made me feeling very comfortable when I was re visiting GCSE maths.
He is clear, concise and very patient.
It was a revelation to me that there is a reason why seemingly arbitrary mathematical facts are true! And in fact it is possible to understand why they are true.
I would highly recommend him - excellent tutor!
