About Miles

I’ve been writing shorts and features for 10 years. I’ve won awards at Oscar-tier festivals internationally including Tribeca and even top placement in the Academy Nicholl fellowship. I take great pride in the feedback I give every week, every year. Very passionate about teaching my students how to take their script to screen, and to make things they can get made and get out there. Screenwriting is the blueprint. To make it, you’ve got to make it. If you’re interested in making work you can sell, we will polish your work up and get it to A tier. If you want to get it made, we will talk strategy and how to plan your path forward in the complex world of filmmaking today.

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I have always been interested in story telling, but I especially love writing and filmmaking because I truly believe it cannot be mastered. There is always room to grow, to explore and develop. When the goal is to grow and not to impress, you'll be surprised at where your art will take you.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I really love Charlie Kaufman and other writers that acknowledge just how difficult writing can be. It never gets easier, only though discipline can you improve. Writers who make the 'crazy choice' are always so much fun. Don't take yourself too seriously.
  • What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

The best story come from the imaginary journal entry you wouldn't want anyone to read. Even with comedy. If you are sharing a piece of yourself that is hard to talk about, anyone will feel it through the page or the screen. They don't have to know it's real, but the work is always better.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Write a little every day. Even if it's about nothing. Write about what you ate, just do it. Write something bad, just do it. Once it becomes part of your routine, your brain will click. Don't be hard on yourself. The ideas eventually come. You just can't judge them too early.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Writing is really hard! But being able to read what you wrote years ago versus what you can write now is deeply gratifying. It's a record of who you are, what you care about and where you've been. Even if it's silly, it reflects what you responded to at every age.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Trophies and awards don't mean anything in and of themselves. But there are particular works that have taken me on adventures that are very memorable. Art about things that are hard to talk about will help you heal, and take you places if you're brave.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

The best students are the ones that aren't afraid of feedback. You don't have to use the notes, but it's important to listen. Open your mind. Ask, does a note feel wrong for you or for your work? Instead of pushing bac,k ask,, is it because the note would require a lot of work or because it's just wrong for your script? Remember, this person put in a lot of time to give you their thoughts! That's okay. But some folks are not yet ready for feedback. Sometimes we just want our work read so that we can be told it's great! If you are ready for notes and not just validation, you're ready to grow. Students ready to grow go the furthest! I aim to be friendly, constructive and above all else believe in my students ability to grow.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

It's important to be a good listener and to understand your student's goals and needs. Not every one wants critic, sometimes we just want to brainstorm. Sometimes we just need advice. All of those things are okay. Your needs come first.
