About Joshua

Hello! I'm Josh, a dedicated educator holding dual BS degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science from UMass Amherst. My passion for technology is matched by my love for teaching others how to navigate it. I work across a wide variety of age groups, helping students break through tough programming roadblocks and complex engineering principles.
My instructional background spans both structured educational settings and private mentorship. As a Computer Language Teacher at the Advanced Computer Science Academy, I provided tailored, 1-on-1 coding lessons in Python, Java, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to students in grades 8–12. At the university level, I served as a UMass Undergraduate Instructor's Assistant, guiding students through software debugging in C/C++ and CircuitPython, hardware breadboarding, and troubleshooting using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
I treat tutoring as a collaborative partnership where we debug code line-by-line and unpack the "why" behind errors. I look forward to partnering with you on your homework, project specifications, exam prep, or lab assignments!

My Approach & Who They Are For
Whether you are an 8th grader writing your very first lines of code or a university student trying to interpret a complex hardware datasheet, my lessons are tailored for middle school, high school, and college students navigating computer science and engineering challenges. With degrees in both Computer Engineering and Computer Science from UMass Amherst, I bring a rare blend of software and hardware expertise to help you master languages like Python, Java, C, C++, and CircuitPython, as well as practical circuit troubleshooting using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.

My Teaching Methods
My philosophy is deeply rooted in active problem-solving rather than just feeding you answers. I treat tutoring as a collaborative partnership. We look closely at small components, debug code line-by-line, and unpack the "why" behind errors. This patient, guided practice helps you develop independent critical thinking skills you can use throughout your academic career.

A Typical Lesson Plan
To ensure every session is highly productive, we generally follow a structured three-step approach:
• Goal Setting & Concepts (10 mins): We start by reviewing your specific homework, project guidelines, or exam topics, clarifying any confusing underlying logic or core principles first.
• Guided Practice & Collaborative Debugging (40 mins): We dive into hands-on work. We actively write code, build circuits, or debug errors line-by-line, fixing roadblocks together in real time.
• Wrap-up & Independence Check (10 mins): We summarize the key takeaways and outline the next steps so you leave the session with the genuine confidence to continue working independently.
