About Alexis
As a student in UNC Chapel Hill's Creative Writing department, I completed a 200+ page Honors Thesis titled "Too Much: Portraits of My Excess." As part of my thesis, I regularly provided extensive feedback on my peers' theses and received it from them in turn. It is through this experience that I understand how to balance sensitivity for a person's work and abilities with rigorous support for improvement. I have also worked as a private tutor for 6 years with various elementary- and middle-school aged students, to develop their reading and writing skills for EOG test prep, as well as to facilitate their writing medium-length creative stories of their own design.

I use Socratic-style techniques (i.e., continued prompts and questions as opposed to top-down instruction) to build agency and confidence in my students, who have ranged from 8-years-old to college-aged peers. A typical lesson begins with defining the student's goal, points of struggle, and then working together to devise a plan forward. Once my students and I have developed rapport, I use the time in between lessons to gather supplemental resources and craft a long-term plan to improve the targeted skills. As a tutor, I have a unique ability to see the potential of the student and their vision of the end product, whether that be a college application essay or a fourth-grade book report; I am merely the scaffolding to help them get there!
