About Eliza
I am an undergraduate studying English Literature and Russian at the University of Edinburgh. My writing never lacks for ideas, but I have been well acquainted with disappointing essay marks due to a neglect of structure and conciseness. However, I have learnt that structure is not the enemy, and can actually really help create a successful, satisfying essay. I remember feeling disheartened to think that my ideas were not appreciated by the examiner, but I realised that all I needed to do was learn how to make them concise, and relevant, with a very prominent trail leading back to the essay question.

I learnt through trial and error how to create an essay which is both interesting, exciting, full of my own ideas, and not entirely off the rails. In GCSE level English it can be an uphill climb for those who have so many strange and wonderful ideas for exam texts that simply cannot be written down in an hour and 45 minutes. Things like paragraph structure, conciseness, relevance to the exam question and essay language can all help create a piece of work that is exciting to write, and marking-descriptor friendly. Lessons are an hour, and will be instructed by what the student would like to go over, and what they would benefit from. I aim to create an environment where unconventional ideas are welcome, so we can discuss how to make the most out of them in essays.
