About Jan Rex
I am a graduate from the University of Toronto. I have experience in teaching both high school and university level students. I am in the process of acquiring my Master's of Teaching. I am experienced in both in-person and online tutoring - including both digital learning and/or the classic pen & paper. I am pretty chill when it comes to teaching - especially with one-on-one tutoring. I am very confident that I can adjust my teaching method to match YOUR LEARNING METHODS. So... My approach focuses on teaching with patience but with a balanced push for motivation. In certain areas such as trigonometry and calculus, I teach how each formula came to be, then teaching the applications of the formula and how it all comes together. I believe that teaching should not be a pressure cooker; instead, I believe that teaching should be a place where the biggest motivation is curiosity and self-esteem. A typical lesson plan would start with a small assessment questionnaire to assess a student's proficiency in a given subject. These will not be shown to the student. Then I build a lesson plan based on the student's strengths and weaknesses. I try to figure out what makes the student's strengths their strength; and the same for their weaknesses. That way, I grasp how to better improve on learning their weaknesses. My experience is based on and proven with volunteering with community centers in providing some after-school lessons to those who are academically challenged kids (Gr10-12) - raising their averages by 15-20%.
