About Jess

I am a literature tutor with a strong academic background and extensive experience in writing, reading, and communication. I hold a BA in English from the University of British Columbia (High Distinction, 2026) and will be pursuing further graduate study at the University of Oxford later in the fall 2026.

Alongside my studies, I have received several academic awards and scholarships, including multiple Dean’s List recognitions, the Jan de Bruyn Memorial Prize, the Roy Daniells Memorial Prize, and the Trek Excellence Scholarship.

I also have experience in publishing and presenting work in both academic and public settings, which has helped me develop clear, engaging communication skills across different audiences and levels.

In tutoring, I focus on free conversation, reading practice, and creative thinking. My lessons are relaxed and interactive, designed to help students feel comfortable using English naturally while steadily improving fluency, vocabulary, and confidence. We might talk about everyday topics, read and discuss short texts, or work on creative speaking and writing exercises depending on the student’s needs.

I work with learners of all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced students. My goal is to create a supportive space where students can build confidence in speaking and expressing ideas, while also developing stronger reading and thinking skills in English.

About the lesson

I teach in a relaxed, conversation-based way that helps learners feel comfortable using English naturally. My main focus is on free talking, reading, and creative thinking, so students can build confidence in speaking and expressing their ideas without worrying too much about perfection.

In a typical lesson, we start with a casual conversation to get comfortable and warm up. Then we move into a main activity, which might be a short reading, a discussion on a topic, or answering open-ended questions. After that, I usually introduce a few useful words or phrases that come up during the lesson, and we practice using them. We often finish with a creative task like telling a story, sharing opinions, or expanding on an idea from the reading.

What makes my approach different is that I don’t rely on rigid structure or heavy correction. Instead, I focus on helping students actually use English in real conversation, build confidence, and think more freely in the language. I try to make lessons feel natural and engaging rather than like a formal classroom.

My lessons are for learners of all ages and levels, whether they’re just starting out or already quite advanced. They’re especially good for people who want to improve speaking fluency, reading comprehension, and the ability to think and respond in English more naturally.
