About Emma

Hi! My name is Emma - I'm currently studying English and French at Oxford. I completed my A Levels at Westminster School, one of the UK's top public schools, in English Literature, French, History of Art, and Mathematics, scoring A*A*A*A. I have lots of experience teaching pupils from 11+ to A Level, and so look forward to helping you excel in your English studies!

About the lesson

My lessons vary largely depending on where a pupil is in their education. For those younger (e.g. 11+ to GCSE standard), lessons will focus more on the basics of the language, and exam technique - alternating regularly between writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Lessons will likely begin with a few questions (ranging from requiring a quick written or spoken answer, to some irregular conjugations), before moving on to a more interactive session. We will normally finish with some more questions, to see what the pupil has retained, struggled with, and what they would like to focus on next lesson. These techniques allowed me to score 11 Grade 9s at GCSE, including in French. For those older (i.e. A Level standard), lessons will be more individualised, as A Level exams (and their equivalent) require a more personalised approach. Therefore, we will focus more on the pupil's own interests, as this is central to excelling in the speaking component of the exam, as well as navigating essay structures and how to consistently score top marks. We will also regularly look at grammar (i.e. tenses, conjugations, passive/active, etc.), to create real understanding and a grasp of the more tricky aspects of the language. This approach allowed me to score a high A* (91%) in my French A Level.
