About Crispian
Hi there, fellow violinist, With a robust classical training background, extensive experience in orchestral and chamber music, and a dedicated passion for violin instruction, I am confident in my ability to contribute positively to your music education. My musical journey began under the tutelage of distinguished teachers such as Mr Charles Anyster (Father), Prof Jürgen Schwietering, and Prof Farida Bacharova. These experiences have ingrained in me a deep understanding of both the technical and expressive dimensions of violin performance. My classical training spans 19 years, during which I have developed proficiency in a wide repertoire of violin works, music theory, and practical teaching methods. I have had the privilege of performing with various orchestras and chamber groups, which has honed my collaborative and leadership skills. Notably, I served as the 2nd violin for Mr. Charles Anyster’s student orchestra from 1990 to 1996 and participated in the All Saints Belhar Church Choir, where I sang soprano, alto, and tenor voices from 1990 to 1999. My orchestral engagements include playing 1st violin at the Orchestral Workshop for Amateur Chamber Music Players in Cape Town (2002), the University of Cape Town Symphony Orchestra (2002-2003), and the Musicanti Chamber Orchestra in Cape Town (2014-2016). In addition to my ensemble work, I have pursued intensive training with renowned violinists such as Eric Silberger, Daniel Kurganov, and Christian Kim through Tonebase Violin. These sessions have further refined my technical abilities and pedagogical approaches, ensuring I stay at the forefront of contemporary violin techniques and teaching methods. My academic credentials include a Diploma in Orchestra Studies from the University of Cape Town (2002-2003) and ongoing studies for an ATCL in Principles of Instrumental Teaching at Trinity College London. These qualifications, coupled with my practical experience, equip me with a comprehensive understanding of both performance and educational frameworks. My skills extend beyond performance to include music theory, composition, and proficiency in software like MuseScore and Ableton Live for mixing and mastering. These technical skills enhance my ability to teach music in a well-rounded and modern context, catering to diverse learning needs and styles. Throughout my career, I have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and a passion for nurturing musical talent. I am excited about the opportunity in which I hope to inspire and guide the next generation of violinists. Kind regards Crispian Anyster

Structured, Supportive, and Fun Violin Lessons
I offer violin lessons that are both structured and enjoyable, tailored to meet the needs of each student. I teach according to the Trinity College and ABRSM String Syllabi for violin, incorporating the Paul Rolland teaching method to develop strong foundational technique.
Each technical skill a violinist needs is approached with care, using targeted exercises and development strategies to build strength, precision, and musicality. For students with previous experience, I typically begin by assessing their current level through a performance piece, allowing me to tailor the lessons appropriately.

Perfect! Cripian is a very passionate and dedicated instructor. His patience with my daughter Marcelle is phenomenal and is part of the reason why she has grown in confidence. We met Crispian at a time when we were looking at finding an outlet for her, as she struggled with some mental health issues which include social anxiety. Crispian was happy to show empathy and commitment to our journey, and through his patience and consistency they built quite the repertoire. I attribute my daughter's newfound confidence to her interaction with him and would recommend him at a drop of a hat. Not only does he consistently follow-up on lessons, but he thoroughly communicates each lesson outcome, strengths and areas of growth, making it easy to keep track of the progress. He is definitely a gem and we are grateful for his talent and passion.
- Marcelle has been taking lessons with me for the past few months now and still enjoying the content I am teaching her. She is always engaged and focused during the lesson while having fun consuming the concepts I teach her to be able to play the violin.Crispian's response :
She has taken up violin because she wants to express herself through the violin as it gives her an extra voice as well as to learn an extra skill.
Perfect! I'm glad I found a teacher as passionate, professional and knowledgeable as Crispian. I've been taking lessons with him for about 9 months. He tailors the sessions to my progress and encourages me to push my abilities.
When we began I had barely touched a violin in my life. Now I'm able to read sheet music, recognise relative pitches and play basic pieces.
I'd recommend Crispian to anyone who wants to learn violin regardless of age or skill.Perfect! Crispian is knowledgeable and enjoys sharing his knowledge. Most importantly, he is very calm and patient during lessons. I am learning a lot from him.
- The free lesson with Martin went very well. It was more of an introduction to meet each other and also for me to understand where Martin is on the violin considering that he has been learning and practising the violin for about 1 year now. I am very pleased with his basics of the violin and bow hold as well he can play the G major and D Major scales in one octave already. I've accepted to further teach Martin on the violin.Crispian's response :
Perfect! Crispian has been tutoring my 7-year-old daughter for 3 months now and we have seen a tremendous improvement.
My daughter's music report this term reflects the progress she has made since practising with him. I find his method of teaching to be ideal for beginner level in that he takes his time to explain the whys and the hows. He is patient and handles her with just the right amount of robustness and patience. He gets what he wants from her in a lesson, by being mindful of rest periods, and engaging with her on other topics which keeps her entertained and focused for the duration of their lesson.
Not only does Crispian bring his attentiveness into the lesson, but this is also prevalent in the time he takes to send practice notes after every session, talking about what was good about the lesson and what needs work, often including video clips.
Thank you Crispian. You are an invaluable member of my daughter's music journey.- My first lessons with Jill's daughter Niarobi were a lot of fun. She is quite interactive and curious about the violin. She has been playing the violin for 1 year now and from what I was able to gather from the first lesson she has a good left hand and her intonation when placing her first and second fingers down on the fingerboard is quite impressive. There are a few things that she needs to focus on such as the violin bow hold, and also correcting posture which I have given her some exercises to work through to strengthen those abilities. Furthermore, it was a great introductory lesson.Crispian's response :
