About Nick

Hello! I'm Nick, a Filipino-Australian improviser and composer currently undertaking the Jazz and Improvisation Honors course at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. While my musical sensibilities were formed under rigorous study of artists such as J.S Bach, Bill Frisell and Ornette Coleman, I use my understanding of key concepts and technology to make things easy and fun for students. I have been lucky enough to be mentored by world-class musicians such as Sam Anning, Sunny Kim, Helen Svoboda and Scott Tinkler, and I was also awarded the Dr. Philip Law scholarship for exemplary commitment and performance at UniMelb. This education enables a macro-view of life as a musician and creative beyond just 'being good' at an instrument. I also feel that I have an equally deep understanding of both methodical and instinctual styles of learning, allowing me to tailor my lessons to any student.

In the past 3 years I have played over 200 gigs in a plethora of different genres, participating in events like the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and the Melbourne Fringe Festival. I am quite familiar with many of Melbourne's most lauded venues, having played many times at the Jazzlab, Night Cat, and the Paris Cat Jazz Club as well as being in the thick of the Melbourne jazz scene. I really understand what it feels like to perform and collaborate in a variety of spaces, from a showcase at the Buxton Contemporary gallery to acoustic busking at markets.

About the lesson

I love teaching people across all breadths of age and experience - I put a strong emphasis on keeping lessons fun while pushing students towards their goals. I have experience teaching children as young as 5 all the way up to mature students in their 70s! I have been a professional teacher for just over 3 years, having taken 50+ different students in that time. I pride myself on a holistic approach to musicianship, taking careful consideration of my students' learning styles and personality to make sure everyone gets what they need from their time with me. Whether you just want to finally learn how to play your favourite song or get super in-depth with your scales, I'm happy to cover it all.
