About Edward

My name is Edward Herrick-Gleason, and I have dedicated my career to making the complexities of the universe accessible and exciting. Before relocating to Newfoundland, Canada, in 2024, I served as the Director of the Southworth Planetarium at the University of Southern Maine for 25 years.

Beyond tutoring, I am an active science communicator and writer. My work is frequently published in leading global astronomy outlets, including Astronomy Magazine and Astronomy Now, where I tackle deep space questions ranging from dark matter's effects to the scale of the visible universe. I am also a top contributor on Quora, answering complex astrophysics and orbital mechanics questions for a global audience.

Media & Public Speaking Highlights

My work in astronomy education, public walks, and eclipse viewing has been featured widely across major news outlets. You can easily find my past interviews, features, and public lectures by searching for my name alongside the following platforms and publications:

Portland Press Herald: Featured in "Maine’s Tour Guide to Outer Space is Signing Off After 25 Years

"Maine Public Radio (Maine Calling): Guest expert discussing the cosmos, space, and total solar eclipses.

WMTW (ABC News) & WGME News: On-air commentator for local astronomical events and meteor sightings.

Public Lectures: Guest speaker for the A.C. Hunter Public Library in St. John's (The Secret Night Sky), the Scarborough Public Library, and the Center for Wildlife.

Selected Publications & Articles

If you would like to read my published work, you can find my articles on the Astronomy Magazine and in Astronomy Now magazine, including pieces such as:

How is the Moon 1% of Earth’s mass, but its gravity is 17% of Earth’s?

How can the visible universe be 46 billion light-years in radius when it is only 13.8 billion years old?

Did the Big Bang Create a Second Universe?

Why are craters perfectly round even though meteorites are irregularly shaped?

I look forward to bringing this same depth of knowledge, patience, and decades of educational experience to our private tutoring sessions!

I offer highly engaging, personalized private tutoring in mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Whether you are a student striving to master complex physics equations, a homeschooler exploring the solar system, or an adult looking to understand the mechanics of the cosmos, I tailor every session to your exact goals.

I specialize in working with students who experience math or science anxiety. I understand that these subjects can feel overwhelming or intimidating, which is why I focus entirely on working at the student's own pace. There is never any pressure to rush through concepts. We take the time to break down complex ideas into manageable, relatable steps until everything truly clicks.

My teaching style bridges the gap between deep academic concepts and everyday curiosity. We won't just memorize formulas; we will discover how math and physics actively shape the universe around us in a supportive, stress-free environment.

I am based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and am delighted to assist local students as well as online learners worldwide.

I also offer:

Astronomy talks for schools, libraries, hotels, community groups, and organizations

Guided night-sky tours and naked-eye stargazing sessions

Original astronomy articles and regular columns for newsletters, magazines, and other publications
